I think this panel discussion is stuck in the old world of what is Navicular. Years ago we transitioned to Caudal Foot pain as the cause and description of Navicular disease. The idea by Todd Allen that wedge pads are the only solution bugs me as the problem is in the caudal foot so increasing the pressure in the caudal foot is not the answer. Shoeing the horse correctly in a standard rim shoe is all that is needed. The idea that extra paraphernalia is going to help more than correct shoeing is just crazy. The farrier is the direct cause of Navicular, this is shown in Lyle Bergeleen's book from the mid 90's. To answer Todd's question about why other farriers never need to use wedges is down to anatomy. The Flexor tendon is connected to a flexor muscle the function of the flexor muscle is to short term raise the Palmar angle if the horse lands on something painful. If you can shoe the horse so you are not creating pain then the flexor tendon remains lax.The stimulus to the flexor muscle is pain which is triggered by many sources but mostly from poor shoeing. Look at Renate Wellers study of military horses. 100% were unsound while shod, after the trim phase 100% were sound, After the shoes were applied more than half were unsound. The research has been done to show that the skill used to shoe is the direct cause of Caudal Foot Pain.
