University of Illinois Seeking Farrier Applicants
The University of Illinois is seeking applicants to fill the vacant position of farrier. Applications are due Sept. 28, 2020.
The position, which became vacant after its long-time farrier Diego Almeida was named the director of the Montana State University Farrier School, requires that the successful applicant “perform duties related to corrective/therapeutic trimming and shoeing of client and research horses, [and] assist [the] university farrier and resident/school master with assigned duties.” Certified journeyman farrier credentials are preferred.
The duties, knowledge, skills and abilities include:
- Perform equine corrective/therapeutic trimming and shoeing on conscious and anesthetized horses; including forging, nailing, gluing and application of horseshoes.
- In conjunction with veterinarians will perform lameness exams on horses; helps identify the causes of lameness.
- Leads and assists in teaching techniques of the farrier trade to students.
- Organizes and leads farrier demonstrations for open houses and other special occasions/projects.
- Responsible for routine trimming and shoeing of clinic horses used for teaching and research.
- Responsible for supply inventory in hospital and trucks.
- Responsible for cleaning the shop and trucks.
- Ability to be around horses and other large animals. Guidelines will be both written and verbal.
- Ability to multitask, as well as provide complete follow through.
- Ability to work with minimal supervision on a daily basis.
- Have a demonstrated knowledge of equine anatomy and behavior.
- Ability to move 50 pounds from one location to another.
- Ability to drive a vehicle and possess a valid driver’s license.
