2023 Farriers Week: Farriers Spotlight

Welcome to the 11th annual Farriers Week Farriers Spotlight!

July 9, 2023

Farriers work hard year-round to provide quality hoof care for horses worldwide. To honor their dedication and service, American Farriers Journal created Farriers Week. In its 25th year, Farriers Week is an opportunity to recognize farriers for their contributions to the equine industry.

American Farriers Journal started the "Farriers Spotlight" in 2012, which is an online-exclusive compilation dedicated to showcasing some of the many farriers in the industry. The farrier tributes featured here were either submitted to us by farriers who want to thank their mentors and instructors or members of the equine community who want to express their gratitude to the farriers who care for their horses. If you submitted a tribute, you can jump straight to any farrier's dedicated page by clicking on their name in the list of submissions below.

There are plenty of photos and anecdotes for you to read and see. Be sure to share this with your family and friends, and give your own "thank you" to our beloved farriers in the comments section here or on any of the individual farrier pages that follow. If you'd like to submit a 2023 Farrier Spotlight, you can do so now. (Allow 24 hours for your tribute to be shared.)

Thank you, farriers, for all that you do for the industry. Happy Farriers Week!

 —The American Farriers Journal team

Farrier Tributes, in alphabetical order by last name:

Johnny Argus (Folsom,La.)

Johnny Argus has been a farrier for 60+ years and still shoeing. He has taken care of numerous horses of mine for the past 35 years. Wish everyone could have trained/apprenticed under him. He is a font of knowledge.

-Paula, Alario, Folsom, La.

Dale Arnold (Anville, Pa.)

Dale is among the best in the industry. His top of the line work is phenomenal. He is extremely knowledgeable and informative. He’s always so patient with each horse! He has such a fun and fantastic personality, which makes it that much better to work with him! I can’t say enough good things about Dale! Everything he does certainly is “top notch!”

— Maya Zerbe, Womelsdorf, Pa.

My husband is Dale Arnold. His father taught him how to shoe. In 1979, we were married and he shod horses in a Datsun b210 no air conditioning but he loved shoeing at the racetrack. He built up a great business. In 1995, we were breaking some of our own horses on our farm, a colt he was riding broke in two. He broke his pelvis while on the horse after being double impacted. He was bucked off hard to the ground. He was taken by ambulance to the Hershey Medical Center. His pelvic bone punctured him internally and he had life threatening injuries. He was in the hospital for a month. He came home with visiting nurses twice a day. The only thing he asked the doctors through it all was when will I be able to shoe again, and that was with a pelvic fixator and a colostomy bag in a wheelchair. Nine months later, he crawled under his first horse. He was physically week but his will was as strong as iron. Today at the age of 64 he shoes up to 8 a day. Loving being a farrier is an understatement.

— Pamela Arnold, Annville, Pa.

Dale is the best farrier around. A super fantastic person and an even better horseman. He is always there whenever you need him and really takes care of our horses! We love him!

— Tamee Erdman, Palmyra, Pa.

Dale Arnold is in his 45th year as a full-time farrier and is still shoeing 10-12 a day! He is highly recognized in the Central Pennyslvania area for shoeing top barrel horses, race horses and hunters and jumpers. He is a second generation farrier, and I was fortunate enough apprentice under him. I extended it to three generations, and am so lucky to follow in my Dad’s footsteps.

— Dustin Arnold, Hershey, Pa.

I have known Dale for a long time and know what a good farrier he is. Almost 2 years ago my mare foundered badly and had some coffin bone rotation. Another vet told me to call a specialist to see if she could be saved. I talked to Dale and told him I was going to make a mud pit and stand her in it to get heat out of feet and he agreed. When it was time to put shoes on her, Dale put them on and has been doing it since. She is sound and is back to breakaway roping for my granddaughter with no signs of lameness or other feet issues. I truely believe Dale saved my mare.

— Dee Dee Fisher, Sunbury, Pa.

Dale is a wonderful farrier who is kind and patient with us and our horses. He does an excellent and thorough job on our horses’ hooves, explains everything and is a natural teacher. He has dropped everything to help us with hoof issues, even met us right after he got back from an out of town trip. We just love him and the care he gives to our horses.

— Holly Manns, Cortland, N.Y.

Uncle Dale is my farrier and he does exceptional work. He loves his job as a farrier and always says, “It isn’t work when you love doing it this much.” He truly does love his job and is passionate about making sure every horse is carefully shod so they can reach their potential. He kept my rodeo horse moving great so that I was able to win an all-around saddle. I knew it wouldn’t have been possible without all his hard work and I am so glad he was there to see me accept my saddle. He is 100% a top notch farrier!

— Adelyn Martin, Fredericksburg, Pa.

Esco Buff (Clearwater, Fl.)

I would like to honor my long time farrier, Esco Buff. I don’t think I’ll ever be able to find the words to completely describe how much I respect, appreciate, and depend on Esco for his knowledgeable care of both my horse and myself!! Not only has he continued to keep all my horses sound over several years and in the face of so many different struggles, he always spends as much time as necessary to educate me and answer my endless questions. His knowledge of the whole horse is beyond reproach; his dedication to his own continued education about everything horse related is fabulous and as a result both the horses and horse owners who are lucky enough to have Esco work on their horse all benefit the most. His love of horses and all animals always comes through in how he handles them and how they respond to him. His is the ultimate and consummate horseman. I am incredibly thankful that his son, Cory Buff, is following in his footsteps so the horse world can continue to benefit from the very best care you can get in the horse world. Thank you Esco, and now Cory as well, from the bottom of my heart for always taking the very best possible care of my horses and their constantly worrying mom.

-Doreen Kula, Boston, Ma.

I have been struggling with my mules feet for years and Esco has been so helpful with getting her back on track! Not only is he excellent at what he does, he's a great teacher and so patient with both owners and their equines. Thank you Esco!!

-Joanne Meighen Lincolnton, Nc.

Courtney Caron (Bourne, Ma.)

Courtney is amazing! He is by far the best Ferrier for any kind of lameness in a horse, especially laminitis! Our original Blacksmith of many many years had retired and we had gone through numerous blacksmiths, causing my pony to have more and more foot problems. When I went to the park with my pony and could barely walk, we found Court. Courtney worked with our pony with special rubber shoes and special pads to make him comfortable and came out immediately when he saw how bad he was.

-Lesley Whitney, Sandwich, Ma.

Brandt Chastain (Cardif, Ca.)

From the first time I met Brandt Chastain CF his professionalism and attention to detail is what makes him stand out from any other farrier I’ve had the pleasure to work under. If you’re in the jumping world chances are you’ve heard of him. He’s worked on Olympic and World Cup winners. It’s been a privilege to work under him. I appreciate the knowledge and guidance he’s provided.

Jose, Gonzales Jr., Escondido, Ca.

Kevin Compton (Martinsville, Va.)

Super friend. super farrier!

Lisa Moran, Bassett, Va.

>>Return to the Farriers Spotlight main page

James Denton (Huntington, Tn.)

James is the BEST farrier! We have 5 mini horses and he is so patient with every one of them. But especially patient with one of our mares, Lacey. Lacey was neglected in her former life.  Her hooves are compromised because of it, and she will never run like a normal horse. She walks on the outside edge of her hooves. James ALWAYS takes his time to give her the time to feel comfortable.

-Tara Kelley-Bertrand , Trenton, Tn.

Luke Farmer (Murillo, On.)

I met Luke when he was 14. He was shoeing a show horse for my mentor at the time, and I was impressed with his quiet mannerisms and respect for the horse and the people around. He started working on my horses a year later; his parents drove him 4 hours one way to my farm. A good lifetime of years since I've moved and he drives 20 minutes to shoe my horses. His quiet patience in working with young inexperienced or traumatized horses is incredible; he’s a person who lives life fully and inspires the next generation to do the same. He’s a horseman as well as a professional farrier: I’m blessed to have him on my horses’ healthcare team.

-Teri Treftlin, Kakabeka Falls, On.

Jessica Fey (Hegins, Pa.)

A decade later and Jess is still keeping my horses happy. Grateful for all she does and always giving them her best!

-Ariana Frantz, Pine Grove, Pa.

Trey Fisher (Centerville,Ca.)

Trey Fisher is professional and gentle with my donkeys.   He is soft spoken and works with with them.   He is knowledgeable and works to enhance his skills in trimming a donkey.

Rose Fountain (Tulsa, Ok.)

I had just gotten back into horses after a ten year break and spent weeks searching and calling around for farriers with most not calling me back or not taking clients. Rose was recommended to me by another female farrier. She called me back immediately and was able to come out in a few days to work on my two mares. The horses immediately liked Rose! One was a kill pen special that found herself at her fifth home in five years with bad pancake feet. She'd been through a lot and wasn't always the easiest to handle but Rose did great and now she's got hard, healthy hooves and a much better disposition and I credit Rose a lot for her role in bringing her around. They trust her and I trust her. Great communication, always answers my questions and listens to my concerns. I recommend her to every horse owner I know and can't imagine horse ownership now without her on my team.

-Keisha Wynn, Homely, Ok.

Cody Gardner (Palio, In.)

One of the best!

-James Gardner, Scottsburg, In.

Justin Gibson (Beggs, Ok.)

Where to begin with Justin. I have used a lot of farriers in my line of work. My boss went through them like water. Justin has been with us for 3 years now. Through his tireless work we can now handle all of the horses. Even the crazy mare who would cow kick you while you worked on her front feet. She never tried with him. One time she rebelled and almost ran me over. When I looked up I expected to see her under belly. All I saw was Justin standing between me and her. Never has a farrier risked his safety for mine. He just went right back to working on her. We have a gelding who can be a bit pushy, Justin just waits for him to calm down. It's so nice to have someone who cares for them as much as I do.

-Phybee Conley, Beggs, Ok.

Hunter Glisson-Warner (Waller, Tx.)

Good things come to those who persist.  My Devil's Garden Mustang gelding arrived April 2022, age 12 with hooves that looked as if they'd never been trimmed and not picking up his backs.  We went to work training him for the farrier, not knowing it would take five months with a dozen baseless refusals from vets and farriers and a relay of referrals across Texas from certified barefoot trimmers to get us to Hunter Glisson-Warner.  Before Hunter came in September, it seemed a life or death situation.  My horse's hoof walls were separating from the sole and he was lame on his right front, stumbling, unable to exercise or train.  Hunter proceeded to calmly, coolly, perfectly trim for over an hour, without incident.  In three weeks she came back to check progress and even them up, all of his issues resolved and it's been regular trims ever since.  Aside from this remarkable gift, Hunter's equine education and certification, business practices and whole horse approach combine to make her one of the most dedicated and knowledgeable horse professionals around.  There aren't words to convey our gratitude, but the photos below showing before and after Hunter's work say a lot

-Liz Welling, Smithsville, Tx.

Ben Goddard (Holden, Mo.)

Ben is an max ferrier taking the time it takes to get the job done correctly not only for the owner but for the equine! He has taken the time to instruct youth and adults here at our ranch giving freely of his time and talents! Ben is highly recommended by all he meets!

-Joseph Bell, Holden, Mo.

Kearney Hillard (Coatesville, Pa.)

I’ve known Kearney my whole life.  He was my brother-in-law.  He began working as a farrier as a young man, and also trained ‘green’ horses at his home in the early days.  He grew quite famous in his trade and worked on many top horses in the Olympics, traveling wherever they were located.  It would be wonderful and a great honor for him to be recognized for his success as one of the top farriers in the country during his career.

-Donna Null, Lancaster, Pa.

I was an apprentice for Kearney for five years. I’m a life member of AFA #410 and strongly nominate him for the hall of fame.

-Vincent Manstrangelo, Elverson, Pa.

Kearney has been a fixture with Kimberton Fox Hunting Club for as long as I can remember. Let's show this man just how much appreciation we have for him!

-Colleen Hefner, Birdsboro, Pa.

He has been doing this all his life, I know his daughter who is extremely proud of him.

-Donna Zielinski, Hopewell, Nj.

Kearney Hillard is an absolute legend in the horse world.  He's worked on so many high profile equine athletes including Jet Run, Idle Dice, and Hudson, yet still made time to work on amateur-owned horses; providing the same level of care regardless of rank or talent.  I personally know Kearney.  He's kind, funny, and beyond knowledgable about all things horse and hoof-related.  The stories and advice he's shared with me over the years are treasures.  I am forever grateful to have gotten to know this fine gentleman.  Please induct him into the American Farriers Hall of Fame.  He really deserves the recognition!

— Colleen McLaughlin, Unionville, Pa.

Kearney did amazing work for the horses of Erdenheim Farm. Whether it was my hunters like Rallydale, or Michael Matz team horses - Grande, Jet Run and more - he did great work. We couldn’t be more appreciative of his efforts through the years.

Jerry Hutsinger (Goldendale Wa.)
It's all about the horse. Jerry never stops learning and applies ALL of his 25 years of knowledge towards helping horses feel and be their best. Jerry has apprenticed with the top talents and continues to enrich his knowledge bank.I met Jerry in 2017 and he drastically improved the hoof structure, hence the quality of life, for a rescued paint mare of mine. He is the fastest and most anatomically correct farrier I have encountered in 40 years of hiring farriers all across the US. The horses appreciate that even more than me - they love to see him!Jerry used his knowledge and great character to bring an excellent, horse centered line of products to the market in cooperation with a highly experienced and educated chemist. He uses these products to actively heal and promote healthy growth. Jerry goes very far out of his way and countless hours treating injured hooves and keeping the good ones healthy.

Jeremy Jarvis (Century, Fl.)

Jeremy is a kind and caring farrier. I don't have a big fancy barn like a lot of folks but that doesn't mean I don't love my horses any less. Jeremy has been my farrier for years. Even in the heat of the Florida summer he has never complained about working under the shade of a big tree instead of a barn. He has never lost his temper even though they have given him reason to refuse to stand still or pick up a foot on command. He has always treated them and me with respect. Two years in a row we were on vacation and the person watching the animals called to say my husband's mare was limping. We called Jeremy who fit a visit into his busy schedule to check her. Both times he called to give us an update on her which was very comforting for me to know she was being watched.  My husband has passed now so I'm alone and Jeremy has never made me feel like he was in a rush, he lets me chat while he continues to work. It may sound silly but there are weeks when I have no one to talk with and I look forward to his visit. He seems to know I need his kindness as much as my horses do. I wish I knew how to send pictures but that would be stretching this old lady's technical ability. I think Jeremy is great at his job and the best farrier around but he's also the kindest person you could meet.

-Terry Maucher, Molino Fl.

Kyle Karlson (Ragley, La.)

A good farrier is hard to find! I want to thank foundation hoof care “Kyle Karlson” for all the great work he’s done! He dedicates his time generously, and has gone above and beyond to make sure my horse is shoed correctly! He has a real passion for his work, and it shows. He is always furthering his education rather it be in his shop reading, or on the road traveling to a school. I have a severe abscess case with hardly any toe to nail a shoe to and he made it possible. My horse went from lame in the pasture, to running 1D barrels again within a week! The proof is in the pudding when it comes to shoeing. I have witnessed severe cases he’s worked on and they always have great results. My horse loves his farrier visits, he stands without being tied or held, I just throw the lead rope over his back during his shoeing session, he will lick his lips and is half asleep within minutes. He’s always thorough and explains what he is doing. Kyle & Kristi always make for a great chat, they are a team when it comes to their clients. Thank you for keeping my performance horses running with happy hooves!

-Jennifer Voorhies, Dequincy La.

Bill Krause (New Baltimore, Mi.)

A skilled farrier is an indispensable part of the team required to ensure the highest quality of life for our horses - whether they’re trained athletes, pleasure horses, or pasture pets. The saying "no hoof, no horse" is no joke. Hoof health affects and is connected to the entire animal. Having a farrier you really trust is everything.

Bill has been my mare’s trusted farrier since 2018. He has helped us through illness, stressful situations, metabolic struggles, along with confirmation and environmental challenges. A tactful horseman, Bill treats his equine clients with respect and compassion. He has a good read on each individual animal which helps him to recognize subtle changes that might otherwise go unnoticed.

Because of his nature, Bill treats his human clients with the same respect and understanding. Whenever I have a question or concern or simply want to pick his brain to try and learn more, he is happy to talk me through it in a way that makes sense and that I can retain. He is honest and realistic in his answers, so when horse life is throwing curve balls left and right, you can be confident you’ll navigate through it with the best possible outcome.

-Adriana Demaggio, New Baltimore Mi.

Milt Patterson (Hermiston, Or.)

He is kind to my horses. He educated me on hoof heath and saved the life of my older horse.  After numerous vet visits, X-rays, ultrasound and hauling to experts out of town my gelding's lameness worsened to the point he could not get up.  I thought I had to put him down but it was Milt who suggested it was his hip.  That was three years ago.  After one treatment I have a healthy sound horse.  He is amazing!

Clayton, Colton,Teri and Oscar are not only the most amazing people I have met but also take such great care of my horse. Moving to central florida finding a good farrier was my top priority and thanks to a friend I didn't just find a good farrier I found the most amazing farrier team I have ever met. They go above and beyond to make sure my horses feet are correct and balanced and have changed my horse for the better. I truly believe they are the best in the business and feel blessed that I found them.

-Mackenzie Howell, Belleview Fl.

So thankful for the FFS crew! You guys are awesome!!

-Carrie Parker, New  Smyrna Beach Fl.

I want to recognize the farriers at Florida Farrier Service in Oxford, Florida. Clayton Wilbur along with his wife Teri own the business. Clayton is amazing! My 23 year old Chincoteague pony was diagnosed with cushings and laminitis in August of 2022. She was hospitalized for a month and shoes were put on at the hospital. After I picked her up to come home, I scheduled her next appointment with Clayton. We came to Florida Farrier Service in October 2022 and Clayton said Whodini's hoof walls were not strong enough to handle the nails. So, he took a rubber two pads, cut leather horseshoes, put side clips on the pads and casted her front feet. The progress she made was amazing and the next appointment she was able to withstand shoes. Each month the progress she makes amazes me. In June 2023 she went home barefoot! I am so amazed with this team of Clayton, Colton and Oscar, who all work on my "most of the time" cranky little mare. And Teri is always there when I have any questions or issues. I love this team and I am so happy to share my story with everyone!!!

-Cindy Connolly, Hernando, Fla.

I have to give a huge thank you to my mentor, Clayton Wilber. Many years ago, he took in some 20 year old Kid that had never even picked up a horses foot and taught me every little thing I know today. Everything from every day Horseshoeing basics all the way to hard learned life lessons. I couldn’t ever thank the Wilber Family enough for the way they just took me in and treated me like one of their own sons. So thank you again Clayton, I hope that one day I’m half as good of a man, mentor and farrier.

-Colton Garmany, Oxford, Fla.

We nominate Clayton Wilber of Florida Farrier Service as the best farrier we have had the pleasure to meet and know. His knowledge, expertise and customer service has been a lifesaver for our 22 yr old QH. Clayton provides outstanding service and produces the results we need. Simply put—Clayton Wilber is the best!

-Jim & Mary Gaffney, Silver Springs, Fla.

Unless you have a horse with a muscle disease, you can’t appreciate how much a good patient Farrier can mean to you and your horse. My horse has.PSSM and she can be so good on 3 feet but that last foot every Farrier who has worked on her has said it’s an attitude problem they want to twitch her. They want to get mad at her. The first time I went to clayton he immediately recognized she did not have a mean bone in her body! He pointed out she was afraid and that it hurt and she needed to trust, it took us a year of doing different things and letting her know she was safe and now we can do all 4 feet without any drugs and her knowing she’s going to be OK and still have her this whole time competing and winning in the barrel racing arena. She may not be the fastest, but she definitely has the most heart and because we have a good farrier she has the best feet now as well.

— Stacie Clair, Hollywood, Fla.

Clayton, his wife Terri, and their entire team are absolutely fantastic! Clayton is a gifted farrier who gives his all to his craft. He loves teaching others how to achieve their farrier goals too, along with providing outstanding service, as a team, to their equine clients.  I couldn't be happier knowing my horses always receive top-notch care from this talented and knowledgeable team!

— Jennifer Duvall Naylor, Ocala, Fla.

My farrier is the best in North Central Florida! They are a pleasure and a blessing to have on my side! Attentive, kind and caring staff that goes the extra mile to make sure you and your horses needs are met! They're skill, knowledge and work ethic are the best in the business!

— Michael Hunger, Summerfield, Fla.

Clayton and his team are not just our farrier they are invested in my and my sons passion for rodeo! Finding the perfect horse for a 11 year old very competitive roper isn’t always easy!  A lot times the horse that is the perfect fit isn’t sound and over the years he’s made unsound average horse GREAT! We travel literally across the county and he’s come up with ways for them to leave and come home sound with some amazing shoeing techniques. It’s nothing for him to show up at 9pm because we are leaving on a 3 week trip and I’m either missing a shoe or someone comes up lame. We truly appreciate our FLORIDA Farrier team.

— Heather Fleckinger, Cocoa, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur has a gift. He not only does a great job at aligning a horses legs and feet correctly, he explains it to where we understand it. Florida Farrier Services Team is truly a blessing in our home. Clayton, Teri, Colton and Oscar care about the animals they service. They care about us, as owners of those animals. We are truly blessed to have them on our side and investing the time into getting these horses back to doing a job they love.

— Ginger Mansour, Eustis, Fla.

Just wanted to say how thankful I am for Florida farrier services! I don’t own the horses I care for but want the best for them like I did own them. I care for geriatric founderd minis so it’s not just a simple trim. Clayton and his team go above and beyond  with their care and out of the box thinking to give life to theses minis ! Their dedication and love for the horses is outstanding! I have been in the horse industry for 45 years and this team is the best I have seen! I’m absolutely great full for their knowledge, understanding and kindness!

Scott Labbee (Litchfield, Ma.)

Scott Labbe is the best farrier I have ever had and I have had quite a few over the years. He is committed to a job well done, always willing to teach.  He is fabulous with the animals and is an active horse person.  He travels to the team pen but always makes time to service his clients horses on time.

Kayla Shepherd (Centerville, Tn.)

Kayla is my hero. She has been our farrier for at least 3 years. My TBx has a clubby foot, we have very difficult pasture conditions (Mississippi Mud), and my horse can pull a shoe off in his sleep. She keeps our horses sound when no one else could. She is extremely knowledgeable and honest. She answers hundreds of questions from me with a kind word and a smile. I trust her with all my horses. She also helps other farriers to become better. She is the kind of person you want to be like.

Cody Dooley (Licking, Mo.)

Cody, with Bar D Farrier Services, expanded on his passion of caring for horses and completed 4 years of apprenticeship in Oklahoma and Texas. He then continued to start his own farrier business in 2008 as well as be the head cowboy on a ranch. He now owns his own very successful and well-known business, Bar D Farrier Services, in Missouri. He specializes in corrective and therapeutic work. He has helped countless horses with different types of issues get back to doing what they love most. Cody looks at each horse individually and what specific needs they need. He will hand make shoes for the horses that need more that a basic shoe, and tailors each appointment to each horse. His skill, patience, knowledge, mentorship, and friendship are immeasurable to anyone I have ever met. He is the most respectful farrier and man I’ve ever known and worked with. His commitment to his clients and their horses compares to no one else. He takes the time to explain to his clients what is going on with their horses and what they can to between appointments to help them. He takes the time to get to know new horses before he gets started with them to make sure they are comfortable with him. From listening to his other clients, Cody treats all his clients and their horses with the same care and attention as he does his own horses. He is a well-known “go to” farrier in the Central and Southern parts of Missouri. The long hours, late nights doing case study work, endless calls/text/messages from clients; he never gets annoyed or bothered. I have nothing but the utmost respect for him as a person and the work that he provides. His dedication to his clients and their horses shows that being a farrier is not just a job for him but his true passion.

Billy Lampley (Leipers Fork, Tn.)

I would like to nominate Billy Lampley.  He has held many positions and supported the Music City Horseshoers Association, holding clinics and holding shoe ins at his shop. I met Billy in 2001 at a Clinic. From that point on he has been the mainstay influence on my own career and many others. He introduced me to the AFA and the certification process. He has helped me on many of nights after a long days work, opening up his shop to work on building shoes, shoe boards, and shoeing horses. Many people have helped me along the way, such as Buck McClenden and Jake Hall. I certainly want them to acknowledge their impact on my career as well. I can’t thank them all enough.

Kyle Carlson (Dequincy La. )

Kyle shod my mare to correct a rear leg that was pigeon toed and didn't have full range of motion. She would blow the first barrel and wasn't reaching her potential o poles. When he started, he told me she should be crippled from the last farrier I used. After about a week and a half, she ran her fastest time on poles. After a month and a half she has full range of motion. She is consistently running low 22s, and inproving, in poles and not blowing the first barrel and clocking faster times every barrel run.

Joseph Santos (Woodberry, Ct.)

Joe Santos, does not need accolades from my quarter. His reputation precedes me by twenty five plus years. From what I learned he works Wellington FL during our New England winter, returning home to CT for the summer. All while working any number of calls to various states in between being called up for complex therapeutic shoeing confronting veterinarians from Fairfield Equine Associates of Newton CT, Tryon NC and Wellington FL. It was FEA who arranged the connection with our horse and my wife, on their first CT winter, down in Wellington FL.

Any owner, would be fortunate to be able to have Joe and his team watching over their horses. His reassuring talk is brief and direct. His horse/client support and craftsmanship is his proof. When he tells you he is there for you, whatever it takes, whenever; it's so much more than simple talk. Which is often times forgotten as the farrier truck lights fade, driving from the barns. Joe played a big part removing tension and concern for my wife's first trip to Wellington/Loxahatchee with her Dressage horse.

When home with his family, for personal time out, Joe cowboys out in competition, with his wife and son. It’s an understatement to say this man is "all in".  One might think this is enough, how much more can one ask? Well again at home on his ranch, how about group apprentices and farriers training seminars, in conjunction with Northeast Farrier Supply.   Of note he makes equal time for up and coming female farriers, two which work on his local team, and two on his Hammers & Hero’s group.

Being recognized in the Farriers Spotlight, is probably something Joe, might try to avoid. None the less, he is well deserving setting a standard not easily attained.

Tim Wampfler (Shafer, Mn.)

On my little hobby farm, you have to love ponies, and I'm lucky enough to have a farrier who, deep down, knows my little mares are his all-time favorite. Tim and I have been on this hoof care journey for over five years together. We indeed have an anniversary. He's patient with my crazy and never not shows up without a positive attitude. He's been able to walk me through founder and white line disease. While on occasion, I'm able to change up my schedule when he needs me to. Together we make a great little client and farrier team. In my opinion, MY Tim, as I call him, has become the best of the best. I love that he continues learning and shares his knowledge with the individuals who sometimes ride along with him, and hey, while we're here, let's shout out to those guys and gals too. And note that if Tim ever ditches me, I want your numbers. Seriously though, I'm so thankful for the people who recommended Tim to me all those years ago. Even without sharing this letter, I hope Tim knows he's appreciated every time he shows up at my barn. Thanks for being you, Tim! You're stuck with us, and I really don't ever want to use anyone else's number. You're obviously just a guy who loves ponies, and we adore ya. Mixie, Cedar, Shiloh and ME!

Matthew Wimer (Smolan, Ks.)

Matthew Wimer, DVM, CJF excels in teaching and mentorship of students from aspiring farriers to veterinary students. He takes the time to visit the Kansas State College of Veterinary Medicine on a regular basis throughout the year to assist with cases with the clinicians and provide the hoof-care for members of the teaching herd. In the fall semesters, he leads a course on podiatry for 2nd and 3rd-year veterinary students which includes teaching the students the basics of using rasps, nippers, and knives. His patience and positive teaching methods do not go unnoticed when working with students who may have never handled a rasp before.“Personally, I saw huge advancements in my skill as a farrier during just two weeks of riding with Dr. Wimer. With his guidance, I became much more efficient in sighting the foot to determining where I needed to trim the foot to bring it back into and maintain balance. He was well-balanced in giving criticism where needed and praise where it was deserved.”

Eric Davis (Gaylord, Mi.)

My dad was a farrier since before I was born(over 24 years now). He has since retired from doing the public but continues to do his own horses. He was an inspiration for me to become a farrier and in 2021 had gone to school. I remember as a kid that he would take me to all of his clients' houses when he would trim and most of the time I would be right there helping hold the tools

Paul Marks (Raleigh, N.C.)

My farrier is more than that, the fist time he ever came out he had to tell me my mares strange stance was because her stifle was out. The first time he met me he stayed with me until someone could be with me , he has since done all of mine and my moms horses, from my daughters henny that passed, to my my moms walking horses, each horse he treats with a passion for the foot and entire care. He is willing to say it’s past what I can do and the best thing is to get a vet to look. He has helped my daughter learn about how to care for her horse and how to ride. He is a wonderful person and an excellent farrier!

Elam Fontenot (Kinder, La.)

We couldn’t be more thankful for Elam and his wisdom! My reining mare has some serious front foot issues and Elam always takes the time to ensure she is shod properly, no matter how much time it takes. He keeps her sound and ready to show!!

-Jennifer Case, Dry Creek, La.

Elam is one of the most talented and thorough farriers that I’ve seen. He always puts the horse first and if ever there is an issue , he will work with you until a solution is found. He takes pride in his work and loves what he does. When he says he will be there , you can count on him to be there, be on time and most times even early. As far as a person goes, you could not ask for a more trustworthy, straight shooting kind of guy. I trusted this guy since day one of meeting him. There is people in your life that you just know you can trust , talk to and would always help you. Elam is one of them. Elam is always continuing his knowledge and is always open to learn more and listen to others. That’s a very important thing because so many folks will not hear what you have to say. Elam is great about listening and working with his clients. He started off as our farrier , but we are happy to call him our friend. I don’t know where we would be with our horses without him. He makes it all POSSIBLE. Thank you Elam!

I am fortunate to live nearby Steve, who had gone out of his way to support me while my wrist was broken in 2022. Additionally, he's been INCREDIBLY kind and supportive in my growth as a farrier. He's always more than happy to answer questions and guide me through trials I may be experiencing. He's been an incredible part of my support team and I can never thank him enough!

Our farrier, Tim, is the best and goes above and beyond in providing the best care to our horses. Tim is a big part of the success of our horses! He takes time to listen to our goals, watch our horses move, and helps each horse to achieve optimal performance. We are incredibly grateful for him and appreciate his genuine care for our horses and wealth of knowledge. Not only does he do a phenomenal job being the best farrier, he also volunteers a lot of his time supporting the Virginia Quarter Horse Association in multiple roles. He also ensures the success of the trail classes at the VQHA shows by bringing and setting up the course! Thanks, Tim for being super awesome at your job and putting the horse first, always!

Matt Grimm (Ruttsburg, Va.)

Matt Grimm CJF is the my mentor I'd wish to give the spotlight to. This guy has done so much for the farrier community in his 20 plus years in the profession and I think it's time he gets a little love and appreciation, ecspecially from me. I was stuck at a paper mill, miserable and couldn't take it anymore. I quit on the fly and went to work at some crap job just to make ends meet till I figured it out. I had rode with a buddies dad that's a backyard farrier but no education and he cold shoes. I wanted to learn and know more and be a true farrier. I reached out to literally every farrier in a 80 mile radius, and nobody would answer a call or text you back. Matt was the only one. Matt took me under his wing and started training me from day one. He saw I had it in my heart and wanted this. Fast forward to today, I have been his apprentice working under him 2 days a week for a year and a half. I finished Horseshoeing School back in March and have been running a successful farrier practice of my own. I still work and train under Matt 2 days a week while I pursue my CF and CJF. Matt also has put on multiple dissections at East Coast Horseshoeing School and been on a farrier panel for a veterinarian seminar. Matt has done so much and deserves to be recognized. I promise I can give you one hell of an article. You have my word. I have a great story.

Elise is my teacher and mentor. It's been an honor to work with someone so knowledgeable and dedicated to hoof care as Elise. I have learned so much since I started riding along with Elise a year ago. She's inspired myself and others to pursue higher education in hoof care. Elise offers me everything that I need to be a successful farrier and I'm so grateful for that. If I am having trouble with a difficult case, I know I can call Elise and count on her expertise. She is an inspiration to me and many other female farriers in the industry!
Thank you Elise!!!

David Blackburn (Georgetown, Ky.)

I want to acknowledge my farrier, of over 15 years, David Blackburn.
David has been a farrier for over thirty years.  He has worked on some of the large thoroughbred farms here in Kentucky, various show horse breeds as well as the back-yard horses.  It doesn't matter if you have fifty horses or one, he will show up to do the job. David is always willing to schedule trims around my work schedule.  When he comes to the farm, he is always polite and courteous to me.  However, what is more important, is that he takes the time to settle and talks to the horses before he begins the trims.  He is always patient with them and is never aggressive.
There is not enough words to express his qualifications and quality as a farrier.

Kyle is the absolute best farrier I could ever have. He is a dedicated and passionate horseman. He puts the horse first always. I am so lucky to have him as my farrier, one of my best friends, and my mentor.
