Kwantlen Farrier Program Survives Budget Cuts

Just 3 months after cutting off registration for its advanced farrier-training program because of budgetary concerns, Kwantlen Polytechnic University is taking it off the chopping block.

“After several meetings of the Program Advisory Committee with the dean at KPU and a strong campaign of letters to the school administration from many concerned parties,” says Gerard Laverty, the farrier instructor at KPU, “the school has reconsidered its position and has decided to embrace farrier training.”

The Surrey, British Columbia-based university has offered its farrier training as a 9-month program that students take over three semesters. The last intake of students will complete the current program March 19, 2020, then the university will revise it.

“The program will take a hiatus until the first week of September 2020 when we hope to have the first intake students into the new program,” he says. “Although the program will undergo some significant changes, it will continue to provide foundation farrier training and remain as an important institution of our industry. Most likely it will be a similar length — 36 weeks — and the same class size.”
