Mark Caldwell, like many others, was introduced to farriery during his time in the armed services. Having had no prior interest in forging or horses, Mark saw an opening in the army forge since they never had ceremonial duties as well as getting a day off each Wednesdays.
After his time in the army, the your Caldwell found himself in a difficult position, however among his meager possessions was a set of tools from his military time which he used to work trimming hooves. The story might've ended there, except for his fateful entry into a shoeing competition in which something finally clicked and the young farrier finally decided to devote himself to the craft.
In this episode of the American Farriers Journal podcast, brought to you by SmartPak, Editor Jeremy McGovern spoke with Mark Caldwell of Alsager, England, widely regarded as one of the most accomplished and knowledgeable farriers in the world. The two will discuss his journey into farriery, a chance meeting with Burney Chapman and how now strives to impart the importance of building knowledge to the farriery profession.
