Murrieta, Calif., farrier Mike Kempf passed away Sept. 29, 2018. He was 92.
Born in Evansville, Ind., Kempf grew up with his great-grandparents in Chicago. At 13, Kempf moved with his mother and step-father to Culver City, Calif., where he found his passion for horses. He cleaned stalls in exchange for riding, and later, he worked with Thoroughbreds at Santa Anita. Kempf even went on to be a wrangler at one of the movie studios.
He went on to practice many trades, including farriery.
