Westmoreland, N.H., farrier Mark P. Hayward Sr. passed away on Dec. 18, 2018. He was 67.
Hayward learned horseshoeing after working in construction, and he fell in love with farriery. Beginning as an apprentice, he eventually became a master farrier, specializing in harness race horses. For years, he worked at raceways including Hinsdale, Foxboro and Rockingham. He moved on to work at local horse farms when harness racing ended in his area. Corrective shoeing was something he became an expert in, and his motto was “No foot, no horse.” Hayward and his family also owned Happy Home Farm in Westmoreland, where they farmed and raised many animals.
There will be a memorial service at 2 p.m. Dec. 27 at the Historical Society of Cheshire County, 246 Main St., Keene, N.H. 03431. In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to Home Healthcare Hospice of Keene, N.H., or to the Historical Society of Cheshire County.
