Butte, Mont., farrier Edward Francis “Butch” O’Connell passed away Jan. 13, 2019. He was 91.
O’Connell began his life with horses by working at a stockyard as one of his first jobs. After, he moved on to breaking horses on the Pat Lewis ranch. Later in life, he worked for the Montana State Department of Livestock and retired as a brand inspector after more than 30 years.
In addition to training and riding horses, O’Connell was an accomplished farrier, shoeing horses into his 80s. He was inducted into the Montana Cowboy Hall of Fame in 2015.
There will be a funeral Mass at 10:00 a.m., Jan. 26 at St. Patrick’s Catholic Church in Butte, Mont.
