The New York State Horse Council (NYSHC) will be awarding two $1,000 scholarships to two of its members, aged 16 or older, seeking education within the equine professional world. Members attending collegiate horse-related programs or professional certification programs such as farrier school will be considered for these scholarships.
The two awards are divided into different age brackets. The first is the Youth Scholarship for applicants aged 16-24. The second is an Adult Educational Grant for applicants aged 25 and older. All applicants must be members of the NYSHC in order to apply.
Previous winners include Joseph Slate in 2016, who attended the Cornell University Farrier Program, and Jenniffer Longwell in 2017, who completed advance training at The Horsemanship Dentistry School. There were no applicants in 2018.
The application requirements include a short essay on what the applicant has contributed to the horse industry, how their education or certification would further contribute to that and why they should receive the scholarship they are applying for. Two letters of recommendation are also necessary. One must be from a non-family member in the horse industry and the other must be from an academic resource or someone who can speak to the applicant’s character.
All materials will need to be accompanied by the completed application, one or more photos of the applicant and a signed affirmation and agreement of the terms of the scholarship. The applications are available for download on the NYSHC website.
The application deadline is Sept. 1, 2019.You can email or mail in the materials. The applications will be reviewed by the NYSHC Scholarship Committee. The winner will be notified by Oct. 1, 2019, and the funds will be disbursed directly to the program of study.
