American Farriers Journal won a Regional Award from the American Society of Business Press Editors for its annual equine hoof-care career guide.
ASBPE announced in mid-April 2019 that the publication earned a bronze award in the Print – Special Supplement category of the Upper Midwest Division, which consists of business publications in a variety of media that are headquartered in Iowa, Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin.
“Getting Started in Hoof Care: A Career Guide for the New Farrier” is a 72-page publication that contains a wealth of information to assist new farriers as they begin their careers. The American Farriers Journal team compiles the valuable information throughout the year by interviewing experts in farriery, health care, insurance and the business world.
There are an estimated 25,000 farriers in the United States. Approximately 97% of U.S. farriers have obtained a high school diploma or an equivalent degree, according to the 2018 American Farriers Journal Farriers’ Business Practices Survey. Fewer than half (43%) has obtained a degree of higher education. Yet, 68% have attended a farrier school — of which, 99% have completed the course. Since these courses vary in length from 2 weeks to 36 weeks, much of the valuable instruction time understandably focuses on practical hoof care and instruction on business practices is limited. American Farriers Journal’s “Getting Started in Hoof Care: A Career Guide for the New Farrier” seeks to provide insight from industry experts to help navigate the difficult waters of operating a business. The special supplement, now in its 10th year, is distributed free of charge to all farriers schools in North America.
