Ed Robinson has been a farrier for about 30 years, providing services in Oregon, California, Nevada and Arizona. About 70% of his clients pay by check and 20% with cash. But for those who prefer alternatives to the more traditional methods of payment, he adopted a couple of other options — mobile money transfer apps Venmo and Zelle.

Anyone with a bank account and a phone can use these mobile money transfer apps to charge — or pay for — goods and services.

“I chose these methods because they are convenient to use with no merchant fees,” Robinson says. “The response from clients has been really good.”

Farriers considering adding a mobile money transfer service app to their business have a variety to choose from. PayPal, Facebook, Apple Pay, Cash and Google Pay join Zelle and Venmo as some of the more popular options available. There also is the mobile transfer service HorseLinc, which is specific to the equine industry.
