Traction is integral for many horses to do their jobs effectively and efficiently, but what about the farriers who are working on these shoes?

Toe grabs have a long, controversial history in the racing world. Trainers advocated their use to improve traction and speed. Extensive research by Dr. Sue Stover, a Hall of Fame veterinarian at the University of California, Davis, found that the risk of fatal musculoskeletal injuries was higher with toe grabs than with a Queen’s Plate. 

While toe grab height was shortened more than a decade ago, farriers needed a multi-tool while working on these shoes. Verbank, N.Y., farrier Buzzy Clina has a bottom set in his collection that is designed to fit in an anvil’s hardie hole for working with different sized toe grabs.
