Purina Animal Nutrition announces a new product line formulated to support horses that can’t get the natural benefits from grazing on high-quality, green pasture.
Omega Match Ration Balancing Horse Feed and Omega Match Ahiflower Oil Supplement are now available at participating retailers.
Omega Match Ration Balancing Horse Feed is a limited-ingredient, timothy-based formula that fills nutritional gaps and provides the fatty acids and antioxidants found in nature. Inspired by feeding fresh pasture, but without the drawbacks of too many calories or soluble carbohydrates, each pound of Omega Match Ration Balancing Feed provides a similar amount of omega-3 fatty acids as 2 hours of grazing on fresh pasture.
Omega Match Ahiflower Oil Supplement is a highly palatable, traceable, plant-based oil that supports joint, cardiovascular, skin, respiratory and reproductive health, muscles, immune function, and normal glucose metabolism. It is not from fish and contains more omegas than other plant-based oils commonly fed to horses.
“Our field trial participants have reported their horses’ coats have never looked better and they’re seeing excellent topline muscling and body condition,” says Mary Beth Gordon, PhD, director of equine research and new product development at Purina Animal Nutrition. “Additionally, horses that have refused to eat fish oils or other supplements are now loving the taste of the Ahiflower Oil.”
Many horses are not able to graze — due to pasture availability, travel schedule or carbohydrate sensitivity — and are missing out on many natural benefits of green grass, including omega fatty acids and natural vitamin E. Purina set out to offer products that would uniquely balance a horse’s diet as nature intended.
“We had to think about how horses are meant to get omegas in the first place,” says Anna Pesta, PhD, equine nutritionist at Purina Animal Nutrition. “How much is a meaningful amount of omegas? What types of omegas do horses need and what’s an effective ratio? Could we replicate the benefits of nature in a feed or supplement?”
After 3 years of working on formulas to help improve the omega status of horses, Purina now has two products that truly make a difference to horses and taste good to them as well.
