International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame member Frank Gravlee, passed away Jan. 23, 2022. He was 90
A graduate of Auburn University School of Veterinary Medicine, Gravlee attended the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, where he received a doctorate in nutritional biochemistry and intermediary metabolism.
Gravlee’s research to improve the quality of horses’ feet through nutrition led to the development of the nutritional supplement Farrier’s Formula and the creation of Life Data Labs. Gravlee had great respect and admiration for farriers and their work. He was among the first to work with professional farriers as a full partner with the veterinarian in implementing a total program of hoof care. He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 1998.
Dr. Gravlee conducted pioneering research into the effect of nutrition on the growth and integrity of the equine hoof horn. This occurred at a time when no one believed you could influence the hoof horn through diet and feeding. This research went on to save the lives of thousands of horses worldwide and provided an essential tool for farriers.
Dr. Gravlee’s research led to the production of Farrier’s Formula, a product that worked miracles and helped many horses.
He never stopped researching and creating new products to help horses, owners and farriers. Dr. Gravlee had the greatest respect and admiration for farriers and their work. Indeed, he was a generous contributor to their work and associations.
