Five individuals were honored for outstanding careers in hoof care during the Hall of Fame induction ceremonies at the 19th annual International Hoof-Care Summit
Farriers Paul Duddy, Arnie Gervasio, T.J. Jones and Tom Stovall joined the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame, while John Walmsley was added to the International Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame.
A fourth-generation farrier, Paul Duddy has done well continuing the family tradition. Besides providing excellent care for his client’s horses, Duddy has given back tremendously to the industry through education generations of farriers.
Instead of training with his father or grandfather, the family felt it was essential for him to get away from home to learn the farrier trade. He attended the Irish Farrier School at Kildare, a school approved by the Worshipful Company of Farriers in England. He later went to England for the British farrier examinations.
“Paul was a young apprentice when I was judging the Royal Ulster Show at Balmoral in Northern Ireland,” says Jim Ferrie, a Hall of Fame farrier from Scotland who inducted Duddy. “These shoes came in and they were amazing. He easily won the apprentice class. If I remember rightly, he was also competing in the shoeing at the same time, which wouldn’t be allowed now, but he was so good.”
