Sioux Falls, S.D., based farrier Donald Merrill passed away April 26, 2022. He was 87.
Merrill had a varied work history, at times working as as a firefighter in Souix Falls, holding a real estate license, and running the Western U-Bar Motel in Canistota, S.D. Merrill also served in the United States Army, entering the service right out of high school. While in the Army, Merrill produced a military rodeo at Fort Lewis, near Tacoma, Wash., where he was stationed. Merrill was an avid rodeo fan. He was a Lifetime Gold Card Member of the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association.
Merrill’s love for rodeo led him to pursue horseshoeing after being honorably discharged from the military. Merrill’s farrier training took place in Sturgis, S.D. While working as a farrier, Merrill managed the U-Bar Ranch in Canistota, where he also worked with cattle.
Visitation will be at Heritage Funeral Home, 4800 S Minnesota Avenue, Sioux Falls, S.D. 57108 on Monday, May 2, 2022, from 5:00-7:00 p.m. with a prayer service and time of sharing beginning at 6:30 p.m.
