Wichita, Kansas farrier Sammy Joe Watkins passed away May 9, 2022. He was 65.
Born Oct. 27, 1956 in Hutchinson, Kan. Watkins graduated from McPherson High School, McPherson Kan.,, and attended Girard Horseshoeing School, in Girard. While there, Watkins began to learn the art of horseshoeing and developed his skill as a farrier. Never lacking an artistic eye, Watkins “signed” each handmade piece with his signature horse head and “flowing mane” design.
Watkins married Sarah Elizabeth Beaton in Bridgewater, Ma., on Jan. 6, 1979. After their wedding, Sammy and Sarah returned to Kansas, working at the Meadow Muffin Farm in Salina. They eventually settled in Tucson AZ, adopting their daughter, Ashleigh Elizabeth. The family returned to Kansas in 2007.
