What's This? The Outer Rim

ANSWER:
Continuous Cuffed Rim Shoe

A continuous cuffed rim horseshoe was commonly used at the University of Pennsylvania’s New Bolton Center to repair and manage coffin bone fractures.

This version of the shoe appears to be intended to be attached to the hoof without nails. The steel tabs extending up the dorsal wall of the hoof originally had holes for screws to attach the shoe at the heels and toe. The steel bar plate was welded as a pad for increased stability.

The fabrication and use of the similar continuous rim-type shoe was described by International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame member Rob Sigafoos in the July/August 1986 issue of American Farriers Journal. Access the article by visiting AmericanFarriers.com/1122.
