American Farriers Journal
American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
This rusted horseshoe was found by Dennis Brown of Milwaukee, Wis., while walking along a gravel road in northern Wisconsin. The road had been recently improved, indicating that the shoe was inadvertently transported to the site with a load of gravel.
The three-quarter fullered shoe appears to have a rolled toe with significant wear. It features three nails remaining in one branch.
“This shoe looks like an old long-heel Phoenix brand shoe,” says Steve Kraus, CJF, head of Farrier Services at Cornell University. “It appears that it has turned heels and possibly a small forge-welded toe grab. It’s likely a shoe off a driving horse.”
