Paton, Iowa, farrier Elmer “LeRoy” Calvert passed away Saturday, April 6, 2024, in Boone. He was 80.
Calvert was a full-time farrier for many years before becoming a mechanic at the Fareway truck shop in Boone, according to Legacy. He didn’t give up his farrier career, though. He continued his hoof-care practice part-time, servicing clients all over the state. Calvert loved his work and often said he trimmed horses in his sleep every night. He was among the founders of the Iowa Professional Farriers Association and was the treasurer for more than 25 years.
“[Calvert] was always there to support young farriers,” according to an IPFA Facebook post. “His humble spirit and dedication touched us all. Rest in peace, Leroy. Your legacy will endure.”
Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Friday, April 12, 2024, at Central Christian Church. The funeral service will follow at 11 a.m. Burial will be in the Jefferson Cemetery. Lunch will be at the church after interment.
