[Video] Farrier Conversations Series: The Sport of Kings: Lessons from Racehorse Farriers

Horseracing has a long and storied history from its origins in ancient Greece, Rome and the Middle East. After earning the moniker, The Sport of Kings, its popularity waned at the close of the 20th century. Horseracing again has stepped into a brighter spotlight — for better or worse. While American Pharaoh and Justify captivated the world by winning the Triple Crown, catastrophic breakdowns tested the sport’s social license, leading to the Horseracing Integrity and Safety Authority.

In this session, racetrack farriers discuss how the industry has evolved, lessons they’ve learned from work at the track, and some of the memorable moments and farriers from decades ago. Pat Broadus, of Shelbyville, Ky.; Curtis Burns of Royal Palm Beach, Fla.; Tom Curl of Vero Beach, Fla.; and Derek Poupard of Sarasota, Fla..; share their experiences. Wellington, Fla., farrier Gary Gullo Jr., who also works race-track Thoroughbreds, moderates this lively conversation.
