Updated January 15, 2025: American Horse Publications has extended the deadline to February 28, 2025. This 10-minute survey is available here.

Every 3 years, American Horse Publications (AHP) — an organization dedicated equine media professionals — conducts the Equine Industry Survey. This survey is sent to adult horse owners who live in the U.S. and currently own or manage one or more horses.

The survey, sponsored by Zoetis, aims to “gauge participation trends and management practices in the U.S. equine industry.” It also illuminates issues important to the equine community. Participants are anonymous, and only aggregated results are published.

In 2021, 7,267 horse owners participated in the Equine Industry Survey. It found that horse ownership remained stable through the pandemic. In terms of horsekeeping expenses, the cost of feed, veterinary services and health products are continuing concerns. However, horse owners are generally unwilling to reduce the number of horses owned or managed, instead opting to reduce spending in other areas, attend fewer competitions or pursue other income opportunities.

On Jan. 1, 2025, the sixth Equine Industry Survey will open to horse owners. Results will be available to AHP members in the Summer and distributed to the broader equine industry in Fall 2025.

AHP partners with Zoetis and Dr. C. Jill Stowe on data collection and analysis. Stowe is a professor of Agricultural Economics at the University of Kentucky.
