Hoof-Care Halls of Fame Honor 6 New Members

Four farriers and two equine veterinarians recognized for their distinguished contributions

Four farriers and two equine veterinarians join an exclusive company of footcare professionals with their induction into the International Horseshoeing and Equine Veterinarian Halls of Fame at the 22nd annual International Hoof-Care Summit in Kansas City, Mo. 

Farriers Travis Burns, CJF (TE, EE), FWCF, of Blacksburg, Va.; Wesley Champagne of Altadena, Calif.; Nigel Fennell, FWCF (Hons), of Farnham, England; and Dusty Franklin, CJF, AWCF, ASF, of Minco, Okla.; were inducted into the International Horseshoeing Hall of Fame. Veterinarians Dr. Mark Silverman, of Honeoye Falls, N.Y.; and Dr. Tone Wien, APF, of Asker, Norway, were inducted into the Equine Veterinarian Hall of Fame.

Tennessee farrier Daniel Watson, who nominated Burns, says he has been one of the biggest influences in the horseshoeing industry in the last 20 years and continues to pave the road for upcoming generations.

“When I was a farrier at Virginia Tech, I saw firsthand how much Travis went out of his way to help farriers and vet students,” Watson says. “Anybody who came into the shop learned from Travis, and seeing that pushed me to achieve my goals as a farrier.” 

Burns served on the Board of Directors of the National Alliance of Equine Practitioners and the American Farrier’s Association (AFA) — of which he was president for 2 years.

The chief of Farrier Services at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine at Virginia Tech University in Blacksburg, Va., plays a large part in continuing education and has led hundreds…
