The Kentucky Horseshoeing School (KHS) in Richmond, Ky., hosted the Associate of the Worshipful Company of Farriers (AWCF) exam, making it only the second U.S. horseshoeing school to host the higher-level exam. The exam took place over the course of 3 days in November.

In 2009, Chris Gregory’s Heartland Horseshoeing School hosted the first Worshipful Company of Farriers (WCF) exams held outside of the United Kingdom. Additional WCF exams followed in 2011 and 2012, again, at the Lamar, Mo., school.

KHS, which received accreditation from the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges last September, is the only accredited freestanding horseshoeing school in the U.S.

“The national accreditation of KHS holds us and our students to a rigorous standard,” says Joe Police, executive director at the school. “That being said, we felt that the standards set by the AWCF exam were a perfect fit for our facility as well as our curriculum.

“It is our hope that in the future, KHS is used as the standard for this exam in the United States, and as such, we are working on the next exam dates for Kentucky,” he says.

Out of the six farriers who took the exam, two passed — Mitch Taylor, owner of KHS, and Jeff Pauley of Burnsville, N.C. Pauley is a 1991 graduate of KHS.
