American Farriers Journal
American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
The winner of the 2013 Edward Martin Scholarship is Erin Carey of Grantham, N.H. Members of the Edward Martin Competition committee that sponsors the Edward Martin Perpetual Draft Horse Shoeing Competition held each September in Grass Valley, Calif., started this scholarship fund in 2008.
Carey recalls that her childhood aspiration was to become a veterinarian. But after taking some equine-related classes at the University of New Hampshire, she came to realize that she was more interested in equine lameness and farrier science.
Directed by Steve Kraus, the Cornell program consists of an extensive teaching program within the College of Veterinary Medicine at Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Jean Meneley, an organizer of the annual California competition, says Carey’s thinking represents the dedication that Martin would have wanted in a recipient of the scholarship named after him. The scholarship was established to commemorate Martin’s contribution to educating American farriers. From a small Scottish village, Martin traveled around the globe to share his love of blacksmithing and farriery.
