American Farriers Journal
American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
Founded in 1978, the Kentucky Horseshoeing School in Richmond, Ky., became the first nationally accredited farrier school earlier this fall. Owner Mitch Taylor says the school is the only freestanding nationally accredited farrier school in the country. While several colleges and universities offer farrier programs, he says his school is the only one completely dedicated to educating farriers in a 29-month program that teaches both theory and practice.
The school was accredited by the Accrediting Commission of Career Schools and Colleges in early September. “This means the school is held to the standards of a horseshoeing college and allows students to apply for student loans that can benefit their education,” says Taylor. “Students can slow down, learn the trade correctly, serve an apprenticeship and then pay back the loans as they start working.”
Troy Price and his wife, Jennifer, at Uniondale, Ind., have started a new horseshoeing school. The school will offer courses ranging from 2-week programs for horse hobbyists that want to learn the basic skills of footcare all the way up to 36-week programs for aspiring full-time farriers.
The Troy Price Horseshoeing School has received temporary accreditation status as an AC-150 career school from the Indiana Department of Workforce Development Office for Career and Technical Schools. Once the school is fully accredited, it will be the only state-accredited horseshoeing school in Indiana and will be regulated by the State Workforce Innovation Council.
