Farrier Carl A. Hayden, of Carbondale, Colo., and formerly of Kensington, N.H., passed away Feb. 6, 2015, in Carbondale.

"I wanted the American Farriers Journal community to know that Carl passed away," says his wife Wendy. "He battled cancer for more than 4 years. The cancer finally defeated his physical body, but not his strong spirit."

In the spring of 2002, AFJ Managing Editor Pat Tearney rode along with Hayden to document his day as the subject of the July/August "Shoeing For a Living."

"Carl enjoyed his day with Pat and as someone in our community said, 'God's cowboys have the best horseshoer now,'" Wendy says. "Carl loved his shoeing work. It was his passion. He only loved his daughter Hannah more."

A memorial service was held Feb. 12 at the Carbondale Community United Methodist Church, 385 S. 2nd St., in Carbondale.

Donations in his memory can be made to an education fund for Hannah Hayden at College Fund, P.O. Box 1556, Carbondale, CO  81623. Please make checks payable to College America with Hannah Hayden on memo.
