Researchers at The Royal Veterinary College in the United Kingdom and Uppsala University in Sweden shared research that indicates longeing as a helpful exercise during lameness examinations.
As reported in Equus, researchers studied 23 horses regarded as sound by their owners. The horses were trotted both in-hand and on a longe line in both directions over a sandy surface and asphalt. Sensors attached to the body measured the horse’s movement and any asymmetry between limb pairs.
“We were interested to see whether horses that are a little bit asymmetrical (i.e., mildly lame) on the straight will behave differently on the longe than horses within ‘normal limits’ when assessed on the straight,” according to Thilo Pfau, one of the researchers. “The ones that are already asymmetrical on the straight often show differenced between surface and rein combinations.”
