As we reviewed past issues to put together this 35th Anniversary issue of American Farriers Journal, we were all but overwhelmed by the broad spectrum of topics as well as the number of contributors covered in the magazine’s pages over that time.

And we thought we’d like to share a wish list of things we hope you’ll notice in these pages in the next decade.

More Equine Veterinarians.

While veterinary schools across the country are full, not enough of those graduates choose to pursue a career in equine or other large animal fields. We hope veterinary schools, equine veterinarians and equine groups can work together to draw more young veterinarians into the equine field.

More Funding For Hoof-Care Research.

Scientists, veterinarians and farriers who are conducting hoof-care research feel they are on the verge of truly important breakthroughs in treating diseases such as laminitis, conditions like navicular syndrome and a better understanding of the mechanics of stride and hoof  expansion. But many of these same researchers spend as much time chasing down the money to keep their projects going as they do in designing and conducting experiments.  

We hope we’ll see more recognition in the equine community of the importance of funding that hoof-care research, which will lead to great discoveries.

Success For Innovative Farrier Training Programs.
