Q:I became a farrier 11 years ago and have been on hiatus for the last 2 years after getting married and moving twice. We are now living in Fallon, Nev., and I would like to build a shoeing business again. Does anyone have any advice?

A:I don’t know the area, but I can offer advice about being the new guy.

First, write an introductory letter explaining who you are and when you’ll be coming to the area — treat it like a cover letter for a resume. Hit on your high points, such as working specifically on hunters or lameness cases. Talk a little about yourself and a lot about your commitment to continued education and the professional vet, farrier, trainer and owner relationship.

Then get the names and addresses for all the equine vets, equine chiropractors, farriers, and boarding and training facilities within 50-100 miles from where you’ll be living. The radius depends on how many there are. Start with an Internet search, but also call vets and trainers and get the names of other professionals. Sometimes that’s the only way to find the local farriers.

Next, send letters to everyone on your list and be sure to include some business cards. Once you get to your new home, hit the road and visit each person that received a…
