Globe Pequot Press created the Knack series of books as quick reference guides on dozens of topics. Among these are several equine titles, including Leg And Hoof Care For Horses.

The author, Micaela Myers, is a horsewoman with two other equestrian books under her belt. She isn’t a hoof-care professional, a DVM reviewed the book for errors. Also Myers is generous in her praise of farriers and veterinarians in this book.

In the mold of other Knack volumes, she wrote the book with succinct paragraphs and bullet points. The book is very thorough, covering every imaginable hoof-care topic, but lacks depth beyond that slight introduction.

High Point

The best feature of this book is its use of images. Kelly Meadows, who raises Quarter Horses, served as photographer for this guide and did a spectacular job supplying the majority of pictures.

The book designers were skillful in their usage of indicator arrows and other graphic elements. All too often, images used to explain equine afflictions and issues lack specification. The graphic elements in this book remove all uncertainty.

A good example of this marriage of appropriate images with a strong design is any section that deals with bone or soft tissue problems.
