LATERAL BAR SHOE

Use This Mail-In Learning Opportunity to Expand Your Forging Skills

By participating in this year’s mail-in forging exercise, you’ll receive a personalized analysis of your forging skills without ever leaving home

LATERAL BAR SHOE WITH MASSELOTTE CLIP. It can be forged from any bar stock, as long as it is 8 millimeters (5/16-inch) thick. The dimensions are 155 mm (6.1 inches) wide and 150 mm (5.9 inches) long. The nail to be used is a Mustad MX70.

After pounding out shoe after shoe, you may think your forging skills are pretty darned good. But have you ever wondered whether you might be able to improve on some of the finer points of forging your shoes?

If so, nothing beats an outside analysis of your forging skills by a team of shoeing experts to see just how far you’ve come in your shoeing work. And the best part of participating in this year’s mail-in forging exercise is that you never have to leave home while having two experts evaluate your shoe-making skills.

Being held for the sixth time, this educational event is co-sponsored by American Farriers Journal and the World Championship Blacksmiths’ Competition that is held each July during the Calgary Stampede in Calgary, Alberta.

An Easy Solution

By forging a lateral bar shoe featuring a masselotte clip at home in your shop and having it arrive in Calgary before June 15, you’ll see how your forging skills and techniques measure up with other farriers from around the world. Most importantly, you’ll receive a personalized written evaluation on how your shoe was evaluated by this year’s Calgary shoeing competition judges, Gerard Laverty of Canada and Dave Duckett from Pennsylvania.
