American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
Farriers have seen many fads come and go. As new technology and materials filter down from medical, military and space programs, we face a variety of new adhesives and synthetic materials.
Many farriers and manufacturers classify most of these new shoe materials as plastic shoes. While this may be chemically correct, the term synthetic is more appropriate.
It is unfortunate that many times, we search for the miracle shoe or shoeing system that will readily benefit every horse on the planet. The fact is that, with all of the shoeing options available, no single shoe or shoeing method will benefit every horse.
I firmly belief that we need to leave our options open and evaluate the new technology. Do not discount any ideology on the market as bunk; instead research, understand and attempt to implement all forms of shoeing into your knowledge base.
