104 "Best of the Best" Shoeing Ideas

At the International Hoof-Care Summit, veteran shoers shared the best shoeing tips, tricks and techniques they’ve used during their shoeing careers

In two powerful idea-a-minute presentations at the recent International Hoof-Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio, seven veteran shoers shared more than eight dozen money-making ideas. The goal was to provide attendees with rock-solid ways to produce higher qualify hoof-care work while doing an even better job of managing their farrier business in 2004.

These outstanding farriers included:

Fred Cleveland, Marshall, Va. Shoeing for 39 years, Cleveland works in the hunt country of northern Virginia along with 53 other farriers and 26 equine veterinarians. He has plenty of knowledge in dealing with all types of specialized shoeing work.

Mike DeLeonardo, Jr., Salinas, Calif. He runs a highly successful multi-farrier business and has many valuable ideas on how to make this type of venture work while helping you make your shoeing work more efficient.

Marshall Iles, Calgary, Alberta. Iles shoes high-performance hunters, jumpers and dressage horses and also serves as chairman of the World Championship Blacksmiths’ competition committee at the Calgary Stampede. The Calgary forging competition is celebrating its 25th anniversary in July.

Kevin Keeler, Star, Idaho. A veteran farrier and product innovator, Keeler has plenty of field-tested ideas for shoeing along with valuable tips on how you can avoid serious career-ending injuries.

John Sligh, Reddick, Fla. Shoeing for 38 years, Sligh today works mainly with hunters and jumpers. He’s a down-to-earth shoer with plenty of practical shoeing ideas for handling the footcare needs of racehorses, gaited horses, eventers, dressage horses and many other types of working horses.
