American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
Eleanor M. Kellon helps farriers, horse owners and trainers take some of the guesswork out of equine nutrition with this book that should be of particular interest to anyone involved with performance horses.
In her introduction, Kellon notes that there is a great deal of scientific information available regarding nutrition and its effect on the performance of human athletes, but virtually none on the relationship between nutrition and the equine athlete. Her book tries to fill in some of the void.
“The use of nutrition to maximize health and performance and to prevent and treat disease is highly effective and safer than conventional drugs,” Kellon writes in her introduction. “It is a science backed by many of the world’s best minds working on riddles of nutrition in many species. It is also an area that has been sadly neglected in the care and management of horses.”
Kellon, an honors graduate of the University of Pennsylvania Veterinary School, operates a Standardbred racing stable in southeastern Pennsylvania. She has written extensively on equine health care and has developed diets for enhancing the performance of horses as well as extending their youth and vigor.
In this book, Kellon attempts to separate what is known and unknown about dietary requirements and toxic levels of vitamins, minerals and other supplemental nutrients.
