Heat-related health problems can be life threatening in hot weather.
Heat cramps involve severe muscle cramps and profuse sweating. At the start of these symptoms, stop working! Drink plenty of water with a little salt, or sport drink to replace electrolytes. Also stretch the muscles involved.
Heat exhaustion involves general muscle fatigue from loss of body fluids. Symptoms include moist, clammy skin, nausea, dizziness and a faster pulse. Stop work. Lie down in a cool place with your feet up. Apply wet towels and ice packs to the body. If not fully recovered in 30 minutes, seek medical attention.
Heat stroke is the body’s inability to cool itself. It is a medical emergency. Signs include hot, dry skin (possibly with no sweat), mental confusion, loss of motor control, nausea and a strong pulse. Treatment involves calling emergency medical service immediately and following management for heat exhaustion until help arrives.
Prevention is key! Try to consume 10 ounces of water for every 30 minutes of work. Avoid caffeine.
