American Farriers Journal
American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
THE BUSINESS RIG. This office on the road allows Coker to perform exams and diagnosis, then switch roles and fire up a forge to treat lameness cases.
Mike Coker, a Certified Journeyman Farrier since 1973 and a practicing equine veterinarian since 1998, has set up this unusual rig.
The trailer for this mobile vet is made by Exiss and the farrier compartment was outfitted by Stone Well Bodies and Equipment. Coker then added shelves, racks and drawers. One of the distinctive features to this rig is that it houses Coker’s X-ray processor.
Coker, who practices equine medicine with his wife, Rose, at their West Georgia Veterinary Associates Practice in Carrollton, Ga., has a client base that resides within a 70-mile radius. The Cokers examine and care for everything from hunter/jumpers to Hanoverians, Quarter Horses, Morgans, draft horses and gaited horses.
“The processor allows me to process the films on location, saving time for both my clients and me,” he says.
Coker’s diagnostic equipment, including radiography, ultrasound and endoscope units, are located in the gooseneck area of the trailer. The accompanying printers and other equipment are also located there.
The rig is outfitted with a dual power supply. One supply is via landline that can be run to the barn. Once plugged in, a battery charger recharges a large 12-volt battery. The other power supply is an 8 kilowatt generator. In the absence of an AC supply the generator will charge the electrical circuits.
