American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
There are very few people who have done more to advance the understanding of laminitis than Dr. Christopher Pollitt, director of the Australian Equine Laminitis Research Unit at the University of Queensland. And now some of Pollitt’s groundbreaking findings are available for downloading free from the Unit’s Web site at Laminitis Research.
The site has 30 Adobe Acrobat files offering both scientific information about the development and possible causes of the disease as well as practical information on treating and preventing it.
Pollitt is offering the files for use by libraries, universities, equine practitioners, farriers and horse owners for educational purposes. The material is copyrighted and remains the property of the AELRU.
One of the highlights of the third annual International Hoof-Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio, was the awarding of the 2005 IHCS Speaker Awards.
Speaker awards go to individuals who earned the highest marks in evaluations from Summit attendees. The awards were announced by Frank Lessiter, editor and publisher of American Farriers Journal, the sponsor of the event.
The 2005 IHCS Speaker Award winners included: Dr. Andy Parks of the University of Georgia, for a presentation on equine anatomy; Gene Ovnicek of Colorado, for a presentation on balance; Steve Stanley and Bill Christman of Kentucky, for a presentation on shoeing standardbreds; and Mike Miller of Alabama for a presentation on how farriers can better protect their bodies and backs while shoeing.
