UNDERCOVER RIG. With no advertising of any sort and the Extendo Bed contained with the truck, Rob McCumber’s shoeing rig looks like any other well-kept pickup on the road.
Farrier Rob McCumber used to pull a walk-in shoeing trailer with his pickup truck. But then the homeowners’ association in his Boynton Beach, Fla., neighborhood banned resident parking and storage of commercial utility trucks, so McCumber had to find an alternative.
That’s when he equipped his pickup with an Extendo Bed that fits as much shoeing equipment as possible onto the bed of the truck. With the Extendo Bed slid under the cap, and with no markings on the truck’s exterior, the rig looks like any other well-kept 1999 Dodge Ram and McCumber is in good standing with the homeowners’ association.
Though McCumber had never previously considered an Extendo Bed, after 2 years of use he says, “I love it for its simplicity. I can drive it through car washes or bank windows with no problems, and on the job all I have to do is slide the bed out and start working.”
At 4 feet wide and nearly 6 feet long, the Extendo Bed nearly fills the truck bed and easily holds a couple of drill presses, a wheel grinder, a forge, and an anvil and its stand. McCumber bought and installed cabinets and shelves from Stone Well Bodies for extra storage space for nails, pads and other loose items on the bed, as well as shoe racks mounted along…
