Scott Morrison, the equine veterinarian who heads up the podiatry practice at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital in Lexington, Ky., is on the go 6 and often 7 days a week, providing footcare for horses with problem feet.
When you’re on that kind of schedule, sometimes it’s nice to take a couple of days off and get out of town — say to be a speaker at a clinic or conference to share what you’ve learned during all of that running around.
Morrison was in Wisconsin recently, spending one day at a hands-on clinic and demonstration at the Wisconsin Equine Clinic & Hospital in Oconomowoc, then speaking to a state veterinarians’ conference in Madison the next day. The veterinarian, who worked his way through vet school shoeing horses as a graduate of Danny Ward’s shoeing school, shared thoughts on a wide variety of topics during his visit to Wisconsin.
For treating problems in any feet, Morrison says to be sure to do an adequate exam and clean up the foot. There may be times when the white line or heels are sore, rather than more severely damaged. He likes to soak any hooves that appear to have penetrating infections with products like Clean Trax from Equine Technologies or White Lightning from Grand Circuit Products.
