More and more, having the ability to glue on horseshoes helps a farrier earn more money, serve more clients and help more horses. But inexperienced farriers who find themselves in a situation where a glue-on might be a solution may be hesitant about trying the technology.

But there’s no reason to think you can’t master this skill. That was the overriding message from a panel of glue-on experts who offered advice on the topic during the 2006 International Hoof-Care Summit in Cincinnati, Ohio. Here’s a look at what these experts had to say.

Stephen O’Grady, a farrier and equine veterinarian from Marshall, Va., has kept records on more than 2,000 of the horses he has glued shoes on. Of those, only six have lost shoes within a four-week period. He believes that gives credibility to the procedure he uses.

“Glue-on shoes are just another option for the hoof-care professional,” he says.
