The Kentucky Derby Museum, along with the 2015 Secretariat Festival and Secretariat.com, have applied to Guinness World Records as it attempts to create the largest horseshoe.
Expected to weigh nearly a half ton, the shoe, a replica of the one worn by the 1973 Triple Crown winner, was cast by Louisville-based Eagle Sign & Design Inc. and Thoro'bred Inc., which made Secretariat's originals. It will be unveiled at 1 p.m. Sept. 20.
"For years, we have discussed introducing a special piece into our museum collection and to have this unique shoe representing Secretariat is fantastic," said Derby Museum President Patrick Armstrong. "A horseshoe of this magnitude is iconic to our mission and has the potential to be a signature exhibit."
