A Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital farrier and veterinarian was killed Monday afternoon when he was hit by a car while riding a bicycle on a western Vermont highway, police say.
Dr. Robert A. Agne, 54, was hit just after 3:30 p.m. as he rode along Route 30, just east of the state line, according to Vermont State Police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
The investigation was ongoing as of Tuesday, and Vermont State Police did not say whether charges would be filed.
Agne worked at Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital on Henning Road in Saratoga Springs, having also worked at the hospital's location in Kentucky.
Agne had been practicing seasonally in the region for years, but just recently moved to the region full-time, according to a former colleague.
"He and his wife had just bought a house in Granville. He was doing really well here. His practice had taken off," says Dr. Scott Ahlschwede, a partner in the veterinary practice.
He had been a veterinarian since 2003, and his wife also works for Rood & Riddle Equine Hospital.
