The farrier business program is among three that are on the chopping block at Northwest College in Powell, Wyo., the Powell Tribune reports.
College President Stefani Hicswa is recommending the elimination of the college’s program in farrier business, journalism and television and radio broadcast. In addition, she is advising the acceptance of 17 early retirement applications and the elimination of four positions.
The recommendation to eliminate the programs is the result of an economic analysis detailed in a report for board members. The board will meet Monday.
The proposed budget measures will reduce spending by $2.6 million for the 2016-17 budget year. Another $1.3 million in cost reductions must be found, Hicswa says.
“These are people’s lives, and I am just so, so sad,” she tells the Tribune. “No college president ever wants to cut any quality program, and I’m recommending three for elimination. It’s heartbreaking.”
