American Farriers Journal
American Farriers Journal is the “hands-on” magazine for professional farriers, equine veterinarians and horse care product and service buyers.
Proper body mechanics play an important part in longevity in our chosen profession. Bad backs, sore elbows and sore shoulders have plagued many shoers and undoubtedly sent a few to desk jobs.
Most of us don’t worry about our bodies until the aches and pains begin to nag us. This approach is reactive and won’t get you ahead. By studying your own biomechanics, you can take a proactive step toward ensuring your career as a healthy horseshoer.
One of the easiest methods, although possibly a costly one, is spending a couple of days working with a renowned farrier and getting pointers as to what you could change.
Another method is to set up a mirror or video camera in your shop for a few minutes and watch how you stand and work at the anvil. You can even set it up so you can see how you work underneath a horse.
This exercise can also be helpful in preparing for certifications and competitions as well as keeping your body in good health. Remember that your body is the most important tool you have.
