The Department of Large Animal Clinical Sciences in the College of Veterinary Medicine is seeking applications for a farrier position.
Certified Journeyman Farrier (CJF) is preferred or a non-certified journeyman farrier with advanced training will be considered (e.g.) Must have previous experience in advanced podiatry services. Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be willing to work as a part of a team. Must be able to perform hoof trimming, welding, work with a hot forge, construct horse shoes, all aspects of application of farrier shoes and devices.
The farrier would provide basic and advanced farrier services to horse clients, horses referred by practicing veterinarians, and patients of the Veterinary Medical Center. The farrier would also provide services for the teaching herd horses of the College of Veterinary Medicine. Services would include consultations for hoof disorders, hoof trimming, shoeing, corrective trimming, corrective shoeing, and manufacture and application of specialty appliances as needed.
The farrier also would assist in instruction of professional students in classroom, laboratory and clinical settings. The farrier would be expected to participate in continuing education events and to organize an annual farrier CE event. The farrier will be expected to generate both on-farm and in-hospital clientele sufficient to support the service.
