California farrier William U. Whitney passed away Wednesday, Nov. 9, 2016, in Windsor, Colo. He was 99.
He graduated from Santa Cruz High School in 1935 and also trained polo ponies during this time. After high school, he moved to Carmel Valley and managed a thoroughbred breeding farm. During this time, he met Virginia Ernestine Murphy and they were married in 1940.
Whitney joined the Army in 1942 during World War II. Upon return from the service in 1945, he became a farrier and spent the next 41 years shoeing horses, until retiring in 1987. After his retirement, he enjoyed fishing, hunting, watch football on TV and walking with his dog, Corgi.
