2022 Farriers Week: Farriers Spotlight

Welcome to the 10th annual Farriers Week Farriers Spotlight!

July 10, 2022

Farriers work hard year-round to provide quality hoof care for horses worldwide. To honor their dedication and service, American Farriers Journal created Farriers Week. In its 10th year, Farriers Week is an opportunity to recognize farriers for their contributions to the equine industry.

American Farriers Journal started the "Farriers Spotlight" in 2012, which is an online-exclusive compilation dedicated to showcasing some of the many farriers in the industry. The farrier tributes featured here were either submitted to us by farriers who want to thank their mentors and instructors or members of the equine community who want to express their gratitude to the farriers who care for their horses. If you submitted a tribute, you can jump straight to any farrier's dedicated page by clicking on their name in the list of submissions below.

There are plenty of photos and anecdotes for you to read and see. Be sure to share this with your family and friends, and give your own "thank you" to our beloved farriers in the comments section here or on any of the individual farrier pages that follow. If you'd like to submit a 2022 Farrier Spotlight, you can do so now. (Allow 24 hours for your tribute to be shared.)

Thank you, farriers, for all that you do for the industry. Happy Farriers Week!

Farrier Tributes, in alphabetical order by last name:

Dale Arnold (Annville, Pa.)

Dale is among the best in the industry. His top of the line work is phenomenal. He is extremely knowledgeable and informative. He’s always so patient with each horse! He has such a fun and fantastic personality, which makes it that much better to work with him! I can’t say enough good things about Dale! Everything he does certainly is “top notch!”

— Maya Zerbe, Womelsdorf, Pa.

My husband is Dale Arnold. His father taught him how to shoe. In 1979, we were married and he shod horses in a Datsun b210 no air conditioning but he loved shoeing at the racetrack. He built up a great business. In 1995, we were breaking some of our own horses on our farm, a colt he was riding broke in two. He broke his pelvis while on the horse after being double impacted. He was bucked off hard to the ground. He was taken by ambulance to the Hershey Medical Center. His pelvic bone punctured him internally and he had life threatening injuries. He was in the hospital for a month. He came home with visiting nurses twice a day. The only thing he asked the doctors through it all was when will I be able to shoe again, and that was with a pelvic fixator and a colostomy bag in a wheelchair. Nine months later, he crawled under his first horse. He was physically week but his will was as strong as iron. Today at the age of 64 he shoes up to 8 a day. Loving being a farrier is an understatement.

— Pamela Arnold, Annville, Pa.

Dale is the best farrier around. A super fantastic person and an even better horseman. He is always there whenever you need him and really takes care of our horses! We love him!

— Tamee Erdman, Palmyra, Pa.

Dale Arnold is in his 45th year as a full-time farrier and is still shoeing 10-12 a day! He is highly recognized in the Central Pennyslvania area for shoeing top barrel horses, race horses and hunters and jumpers. He is a second generation farrier, and I was fortunate enough apprentice under him. I extended it to three generations, and am so lucky to follow in my Dad’s footsteps.

— Dustin Arnold, Hershey, Pa.

I have known Dale for a long time and know what a good farrier he is. Almost 2 years ago my mare foundered badly and had some coffin bone rotation. Another vet told me to call a specialist to see if she could be saved. I talked to Dale and told him I was going to make a mud pit and stand her in it to get heat out of feet and he agreed. When it was time to put shoes on her, Dale put them on and has been doing it since. She is sound and is back to breakaway roping for my granddaughter with no signs of lameness or other feet issues. I truely believe Dale saved my mare.

— Dee Dee Fisher, Sunbury, Pa.

Dale is a wonderful farrier who is kind and patient with us and our horses. He does an excellent and thorough job on our horses’ hooves, explains everything and is a natural teacher. He has dropped everything to help us with hoof issues, even met us right after he got back from an out of town trip. We just love him and the care he gives to our horses.

— Holly Manns, Cortland, N.Y.

Uncle Dale is my farrier and he does exceptional work. He loves his job as a farrier and always says, “It isn’t work when you love doing it this much.” He truly does love his job and is passionate about making sure every horse is carefully shod so they can reach their potential. He kept my rodeo horse moving great so that I was able to win an all-around saddle. I knew it wouldn’t have been possible without all his hard work and I am so glad he was there to see me accept my saddle. He is 100% a top notch farrier!

— Adelyn Martin, Fredericksburg, Pa.

Clayton Wilbur (Ocala, Fla.)

After being highly recommended to Florida Farrier Service it took me a while to make an appointment due to living 4 hours away. Within a few minutes, I knew I had made the right decision! He instantly explained the problem with her feet and a plan for correcting her issues. Along with knowing what needed to be done, he had a complete understanding of PSSM and was so very patient with her (she is extremely tight on one of her hind legs)! She is tracking better and feels so good in competition now! Very Blessed to have found him!

— Stacy Clair, Hollywood, Fla.

I cannot say enough about the gift this farrier has. I have been through a ton of farriers along with lots of vet visits trying to figure out what is wrong with my horses. It all came down to Clayton balancing my horses feet and fixing the angles. My horse issues subsided. He is one in a million and is humble about his knowledge!

— Lisa Miller, Summerfield, Fla.

My 17-year-old Quarter Horse was having some fairly serious issues with his right front. Upon having X-rays, my osteopath highly recommended Clayton. She stated she has never seen work like his. I reached out to Florida Farrier Service, Clayton and his team. I was promptly greeted by Clayton’s wife, Teri. She sent me a list of pics she’d like in addition to the X-ray so Clayton could review. Once that was done, Teri asked if I could bring my horse to their home that very evening. Clayton came home after working all day in the dark. Met me and my horse just a soon as he parked his rig. Never went into the house but straight to work on Curly. Clayton and his team are extremely courteous, caring and above all, extremely knowledgeable. I know they truly care for their clients and their horses. They take time to educate, work along side vets and their clients, treating all with the utmost respect.

Clayton would be a wonderful educator of future farriers. If he doesn’t have an answer, he’ll research and ponder until he has one. His work is exceptional. I truly believe if Clayton doesn’t know what’s wrong, he won’t sleep until he does.

Clayton and Florida Farrier Services absolutely deserve recognition as top notch professionals.

— Julia Faria, Citra, Fla.

I have lived in the horse capital of the world, Ocala, Fla. for 30 years. In the years that I have lived here, I have worked in the horse industry, as well as being a owner. Finding a qualified, kind, knowledgeable farrier in my area should be easy but it has not been, until recently. I saw Florida Farrier Service name pop up on social media almost every day and at the time our farm was in a critical need for a farrier. I reached out to Clayton and his wife Terri and from that day they have been a godsend to us! I have never seen a team work like they have and the dedication to get the horses well! To say Clayton has done miracles in the short time we have used him would be an understatement! His knowledge and expertise blows the farriers that I have worked with away by far. The world needs more like Clayton and his team!

— Terri Lamerand, Ocala, Fla.

Thank you so much to the farriers that make up Florida Farrier Service. My horses and family appreciate their kindness, compassion and dedication to their craft!

– Erica Hills, Osteen, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur

Clayton has been my farrier for over 20 years and in that time I have watched him grow into one of the best farriers in Florida. He has ensured the success of all my show horses, broodmares and babies because of his commitment to excellence and continued development. He is more than just my farrier, he is my friend!

— Jenny Lagrange, Christmas, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur 2

I have a mare that has chronic issues with the branches of her suspensory ligaments. I have tried several other farriers only to continue having the same issues. When I reached out to Clayton, I was told that they normally do not work on racehorses, but they willingly took her on to see how they we able to help her out. Not only were they able to help her, they saved her career as a racehorse. Clayton and his crew are absolutely amazing and true heroes. I cannot thank them enough for the great work that they do!

— Rachel Husted, Ocala, Fla.

I have been in the horse industry for 65 years and I have just received the greatest gift of all-time — a skilled, knowledgeable farrier who truly cares about the lives of his clients, the horses. Clayton Wilber is performing miracles on my world renowned horses that have been severely damaged by prior farriers.

— Patricia Dempsey, Lady Lake, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur 3

Teri and Clayton Wilbur and Colton have been amazing to deal with. The knowledge this team has is extraordinary. They’re not your typical farrier that chops a hoof up and on the way they go. They are caring and compassionate. Their number one goal is to correct and keep your horse sound and out of pain. The team works very closely with excellent vets in our area and they will treat issues together. I've been dealing with an unsound horse for several years, and since February, Clayton with his team and lameness vet Marilyn Mayler have been treating and correcting our issue. I am absolutely forever greatful to this team!

— Lindsay Loury, Dunnellon, Fla.

We reached out to Clayton and his team through recommendations. We have a gelding who struggles terribly with his feet and clayton and his team were our last resort since we could not find someone in our area able to handle our gelding. His team was great at responding to us so promptly and giving us a chance as we know everyone’s overloaded. We drove 2 ½ hours to meet with them and they did what they could to help our boy! We couldn’t be more thankful for him and his team and all they did and their patience especially after a long hot day they still gave all their effort! They truthfully are some of the most caring and trustworthy people and that’s hard to come by now a days! We are so thankful they were put in our path and we’re hoping for a great recovery for our gelding! Thank you guys for all you do!

— Darian Hager, Arcadia, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur 4

If you are a lucky horse owner, your horse can go barefoot or take an off the shelf steel or aluminum shoe. I am not that horse owner. I have a Thoroughbred with extremely difficult feet that would have most farriers running in the opposite direction. It was a tough road, but Clayton Wilber never gave up. He tried traditional approaches, but when that didn’t work he used his exceptional creative problem solving skills to find the answer. He is not afraid to think outside the box to find solutions to the most difficult problems. In addition, he is always teaching. Always. As a more educated horse owner, I am so much more equipped to make sure my horse is healthy and happy (which also means I am happy). Thank you Clayton.

— Darcy Cormier, Orlando, Fla.

Clayton and his team have done an amazing job with my horses. My dressage mare is moving better than ever. All three of my horses relax even more when Colton finishes up their hooves.

— Michelle Bolitho, Summerfield, Fla.

Knowledgeable, experienced, dependable. Great service.

— Guadalupe Guarderas, Ocala, Fla.

Best farrier and friend to both horse and owner.

— Jan Doighty, Orlando, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur 5

Every time Clayton comes over, he teaches us something new about how hoof care. Whenever we have issues, he takes his time and explains each step of his treatment and gives us tips on how to make sure they'll experience the best possible outcome. He and his wife Teri are both a joy to work with!

He's also a great family man. In the attached picture, Clayton brought along Flat Stanley for kid's class project.

— Sandy and Steve Chihos, Chuluota, Fla.

A good farrier is a must if you on horses and I'm lucky enough to say that, in my opinion, I have the absolute best there is. The whole team that is Florida Farrier Service is beyond amazing. Not only do Clayton and Colton do an amazing job on my performance horses by keeping them running their absolute best, they educate me on everything they're doing and the work shows. They have turned my barrel horse around completely, I will never have anyone else shoe my horses ever again. I can't forget about Teri, she is so amazing and accommodating to everything and always finds a way to make it work and I know Clayton and Colton couldn't do it without her. I'm so blessed to have them as not only my farrier service but as people in my life. You guys are more appreciated then you will ever know!

— Mackenzie Howell, Belleview, Fla.

Clayton Wilbur 9

Finding Clayton and his wife Teri has been such a blessing. Teri is super efficient and keeps up with all appointments day-to-day. Clayton has helped get my mare on track with a different approach than a previous farrier and we are already seeing progress! Colton is an excellent addition to the team and I even bragged that my mare stood like a statue while he worked on her. Lately, she had been getting in trouble until we met this team.

I will never forget the first time that I slid her on the trailer and took her along as a consult and he told me he couldn't leave that shoe that was previously put on her another minute! It was already a long day as I was the last client and he went ahead and took care of my girl anyway.

For service like that and putting the comfort of a horse first means everything to me and I would drive across the state if I had to! It's great to have a farrier who works along with so many veterinarians in the area who has such a wide range of knowledge and experience and skill.

Thank you so much to Clayton, Colton and Teri for your excellent customer service and the heart you pour into your work.

— Erika Nash, Anthony, Fla.

Christin Sell (Silver City, N.M.)

We recently relocated to Silver City, NM. Christin came out to trim our three donkeys. It's always dicey with a new farrier and donkeys, as donkeys are extremely misunderstood. Farriers often want to snub, force or drug them. We work with the donkeys daily, and they are good with their feet, but they have stranger-danger. Christin was fantastic. She took time to meet them, earn their trust, and took the time to make the first visit a total success. I appreciated that she does not use a one size fits all donkeys trim, but really studied each animal, their movement, their particular hoof shape and wear patterns. She nailed each of their personalities, she clearly 'gets' donkeys and how smart and funny they are. We are very grateful to have hit the farrier jackpot!

— Kristin Otto, Silver City, N.M.

Ben Haney (Vermont, Ill.)

Ben Haney

Ben was my dad's farrier for his Standardbred racehorses for a long time then he has then transitioned into my farrier the last 10 plus years. He sure knows his way around a hoof and knows what is best when it comes to a horses wellbeing.

Anna Fabsiak (Gleason, Wis.)

We started out with one donkey to six we have rescued, all but one had very bad, overgrown hooves — skittish and needed someone who cared to handle their hooves. Anna has been so patient and always willing to help and give advice. We love and our donkeys love her!

– Anna Kemp, Eagle River, Wis.

Anna has been so wonderful and kind to us and our livestock, especially our donkeys. She is helpful in knowledge of care and we think of her as a friend. She truly has a passion and cares about the animals she serves and for her line of work.

— Vickie Reetz, Gleason, Wis.

Megan Hensley (Fortuna, Calif.)

Meagan is helping donkeys all over, by educating and mentoring people on appropriate diet, trimming and handling techniques. What a difference she is making for all of us, and for combatting cruelty in donkey handling via teaching effective alternative approaches. Nothing short of amazing. So many of us are indebted to Megan.

– Alice Begin, Dover-Foxcroft, Maine

Megan started offering online donkey hoof trimming and education classes in 2020. I had the privilege of being in her first class. She is so thorough and teaches all aspects of donkey hoof anatomy, behavior and diet, as well as provides ongoing support to her students via Facebook groups. I’ve reached out to her privately multiple times and eventually started trimming for other donkey owners in my area who were also struggling to find farriers willing to trim their animals. Today, I have a successful side business trimming donkeys in my area, many of which had traumatic experiences with farriers or suffered from extreme hoof overgrowth because their owners couldn’t find care. Donkeys are definitely different than horses. Megan helped me learn techniques for behavior and positive reenforcement training and today most of my clients I am able to trim in the pasture entirely free of restraint. It’s a wonderful experience for me, the animals and their owners. I will forever be grateful to Megan for starting me on this journey and providing ongoing support and mentorship.

— Leah Swindler, Independence, Mo.

Megan has been an outanding mentor to me. She has taught me safe and humane ways to handle donkeys for trimming.

— Anna Fabisiak, New London, Wis.

I adopted four donkeys that had little to no hoof care in the past. I tried three farriers and contacted at least a dozen others. Most weren’t willing to help a donkey and the ones that were, they were either unreliable, rough on them or trimmed too conservatively to make a difference. I finally stumbled on Megan. She is a true shining star in a world that I could not navigate. She taught me how to not only trim, but to handle my donkeys so that trimming is possible. I am able to fully trim three of the four. The other one was severely mishandled and we are still working on trust. I could not be more thrilled to watch her work to give donkeys their fair shake in this world of bullies, they are incredible and intelligent creatures! Thanks for everything Megan.

— Lisa Magill, Savannah, Tenn.

Megan is a true whisperer of equines and makes the animals at ease and the trimming is an enjoyable experience as she engages with them in a loving and playful manner that they appreciate. She does excellent work.

— Amy Stover, Blue Lake, Calif.

Megan has changed my life. In turn, she has helped me change the lives of hundreds of donkeys and mules through her online education resources, social media presence, and friendship. Without her, I couldn't have possibly brought comfort and peace to my client donkeys/mules. Her teachings are invaluable and she deserves every award, all the recognition and praise one could get. She's touched the lives of thousands of long ears across the world and we would all be worse off without her, her giant heart, compassion and empathy.

— Danielle Parker, Portland, Ore.

Meagan Hensley is a friend and farrier. She is a friend first to the donkeys she trims and makes certain they trust her before progressing with her tools of her trade. She is also a wonderful mentor and friend to us who own and care for donkeys. I am so lucky to have Megan Hensley as a friend to me and my herd. We all just love her. She is something to Bray about.

— Karen Sorman, McKinleyville, Calif.

Megan was a dream come true for a farrier for my donkey. I wanted someone gentle and sweet without having to use sedation on my older boy and we got it with her.

— Dian Payne, Paso Robles, Calif.

This farrier has helped me online to help train my donkeys to be ready for a farrier. She has been instrumental in getting them ready for the farrier without needing a sedation. Megan Hensley has helped donkeys worldwide.

— Trish Morton, Adelaide, Australia

I’m enrolled in Megan Hensley’s online course to learn how to properly care for and trim my mini donkeys’ hooves. It is because of Megan’s passion and love for donkeys that has inspired me to learn what the ideal hoof should be for my donkeys. I’ve spent countless hours listening to her courses, podcasts, and webinars over and over trying to capture every detail of information. There is so much more to caring for donkeys hooves other than just the farrier work. Their diet, lifestyle and habitat play such a vital role in their hoof health. I suppose anyone could learn to trim a hoof, but it’s not going to benefit the animal if the rest of their lifestyle is not aligned. I’ve already seen an improvement in my mini donkeys’ hooves just from adding various rocks and textures for them to run across during their playtime. I also have a mini horse and it is very apparent that donkey and horse hooves are very different. Donkeys and horses are also very different in personality and demeanor. If a farrier views donkeys as stubborn or difficult, it’s not going to go well. The farrier needs to honestly love donkeys and understand how to relate to them. That being said, if a farrier doesn’t enjoy working with donkeys they need to be honest and refer that owner to a donkey farrier specialist. Megan Hensley is pursuing the change in the world of farriers, specifically for donkeys. I am proud to have Megan mentoring me as I learn to provide my donkeys their best life. As more and more owner trimmers become confident and competent caring for their donkeys hooves, we can change the way the world views donkeys. Donkeys need to be celebrated by everyone for what they endure. They are pure love, peace and joy. It’s not just owners who need to appreciate that. It’s all farriers and care givers, as well. Megan Hensley exemplifies that in every way for donkeys around the world.

— Lorie Keinath, Millington, Mich.

Megan has taught me, and many others, how to correctly trim donkey feet. More than just trimming, she teaches easy relaxed handling, nutrition, and management of donkeys and mules. I now can easily trim not just my 11 burros, but many others we train from the BLM or rehabilitate after abuse by rough experiences with farriers.

— John Auborn, Ridgecrest, Calif.

The donkey world is so very lucky to have Megan Hensley. Through her online presence and training, she has taught me so much about not only hoof care, but best husbandry practices, as well as how smart and special donkeys are. Her passion for donkeys is helping these precious animals all over the world.

— Deborah Lovelace, Hillsboro, Ore.

Megan has helped me tremendously in my journey to be able to trim my horse and mule’s hooves. Her attention to detail and way with animals is unmatched. I am forever grateful for her ability to get my baby mule to be comfortable with hoof trims. Megan is amazing.

— Alyssa Alvarez, Arcata, Calif.

I started following Megan's Facebook page and was so impressed. I learned so much from her site and ended up taking her online course, which was absolutely awesome! From what I learned from the course, I thought I knew what needed to be done, but was still hesitant to do too much. After our one-on-one call, I felt so empowered. I have now been taking care of my donkeys hooves and, although they are not perfect, they have never looked better. My vet was out this week and he even commented about their weight loss and how good their hooves looked. All thanks to Megan Hensley.

— Kathy Carey, Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan

Lead farrier at Oscar's place in Hopland, Calif. Megan is amazing caring loving and does everything she can to give the donkeys the care they need without hurting them.

— Pamela Tierney, Kelseyville, Calif.

Megan has been a godsend to our burro family. Our donkeys used to have be fully sedated by a vet to trim their hooves and would still fight through sedation, one would kick and the other would fall over as soon as a hoof was lifted. Their behavior led to them not being fully trimmed as often as they should be. With Megan’s help, I learned to undo the fear and reactivity and turn trimming into a rewarding opportunity for them. One still gets nervous when she sees trimming tools, and has to be gently reminded that all will be well and given reassurance, but she will now stand quietly after a few minutes of interaction before trimming. The other now gets excited and comes over to lift her hooves for a treat and attention. I don’t know who hurt them in the past, but it was clear they had some horrible experience before they came to us and I’m so glad we found Megan to help them through it!

— Kendra Weber, Lemoore, Calif.

Megan has created many free videos to share on trauma-free donkey handling. In addition, she started her own online donkey farrier education classes to help donkey owners and fellow farriers worldwide to handle and trim their own donkeys or clients' with a Facebook group to support all interested in donkey and mule feeding and farriery. And she is a volunteer for Oscar's Place Donkey Rescue and Sanctuary. Megan is traveling giving talks about the welfare of donkeys and a huge supporter of donkeys worldwide. Megan is an outstanding educator and donkey farrier!

— Angelina Brummett, Oxford, Miss.

Megan is an amazing person and advocate for donkey farriers. Donkeys can be very particular and through Megan’s guidance, she has built a confidence and patience within me to farrier my donkeys. I had farriers who wanted to sedate or quit on us. Through Megan’s farrier teachings, I have been able to take the lead and do this for them myself. She gives us all the tools to accurately trim and properly handle the donkeys so they remain comfortable and calm throughout the experience. For years people have given away donkeys because they can be difficult, but thanks to Megan people are thriving as donkey owners and saving donkeys lives. She is without a doubt the greatest farrier I have worked with.

— RaeAnn Wyant, Tuscola, Ill.

Darren Owen, CF, APF-I, Grad Dip ELR (Davis, Calif.)

Darren was/is my mentor. He helped me become a farrier and later a mentor myself. Darren came into my life in the early 2000s as a farrier for my draft horses. Darren and I became best of friends very quickly. We related more about our full-time careers in public safety then horses to start, but soon that changed. Darren asked me to ride along with him one day to help handle some rough stock minis that he had to trim. That quickly turned into us working together most days that we were not on duty. Starting out he had me working steel on the anvil, and in the textbooks studying equine anatomy. Darren helped grow my love and enthusiasm for farrier work. Darren offered me a position with his company Indian Fields Farrier Service, which I jumped on. Over the years since mentoring me, Darren has mentored many others, and has helped turn out some good and successful farriers.

Throughout our friendship, Darren always encouraged me to continue my education. To help motivate me to do so he would often sign up for the classes and take them right along with me. It was great to have someone to discuss the material with and a study partner for testing. Darren leads by example for education in obtaining his APF-I, and Grad Dip ELR in the time that I have known him.

Fast forward about 19 years since the start of Darren mentoring me, I was approached to be a mentor/teacher. Not sure what to do, how to do, or if I could/should do it, I called my best friend, who not only gave me the confidence to take on teaching, but also the support I needed to help me to be a mentor. This time as my mentor, he also motivated me by reminding me to “pay it forward,” meaning all the time and effort he spent on me should be spent to help another. Darren is very passionate about the “Team Approach to Hoof Care,” and this is just one more way that shows.

His commitment to education, the farrier industry as a whole (by serving on the IAPF Board of Directors), mentoring at least a half dozen farriers over the years, being a field rep for Life Data Labs, putting on horse owner clinics, lecturing at farrier events, and oh by the way, still finds time to shoe horses, is why I respect and admire Darren Owen.

Kyle Hause

When I count my blessings, I count my farrier three times. Kyle has been my farrier for 5 years now, and healthy barefoot draft hooves in South Carolina speak volumes of his incredible talent. He is passionate, caring, and extremely skilled. Your farrier should be your horse’s best friend, and Kyle is that to them and me. I’m truly thankful to be his client, and I rest well every night knowing I have the best farrier there is for my horses, as one of my very best friends.

Mike Stine (Marshville, N.C.)

Mike Stine has been my horses farrier for about 10 years. He takes great care of my horses feet. He has worked with my vet with a pony that was abused and really had to work hard for that one. Thank you Mike.

— Diana Foote, Oakboro, N.C.

Mike Stine’s skill is second to none! He is one of the few farriers who takes into account the whole horse, not just the feet, and is an expert on equine biomechanics. Richard Klauber (Calverton, N.Y.)

Richard Klauber 1

Rich Klauber became my farrier in 1997. I had around 10 horses at the time. I struggled finding a farrier because I really wanted perfection. Rich came along and a quarter of a century later, he’s still it. When I began the horse rescue in 2005, he stepped right up willing to help in every way. Many horses coming in Richard Klauber 2had never been handled and many others had behavioral issues. Without missing a beat, Rich carefully and meticulously worked through every individual and never once was injured doing so, which was a feat in and of itself. He’s got a good feel, solid horsemanship and really great farrier skills and a big heart. Nothing could hold Rich down for long. Several hip replacements, a previously broken back and life’s general rollercoaster have not stopped him. Back in 2014, Rich taught me how to trim and supervised my work of our 40-50 horses for years. Presently, when my back fails me from time to time, Rich is only a phone call away and he continues to step up and give me a hand with our many aged and special needs horses that are really a challenge to do. There are few professionals I know who embody their career so perfectly. Highly skilled, kind, dependable and extremely willing to share his knowledge, especially in order to help a horse have a better life and their owner a better horse. He’s someone who is a gift to the industry.

— Christine Distefano, Southhampton, N.Y.

Glenn Brewer (Locktown, N.J.)

When I got my first pony 42 years ago, I was told to try Glen Brewer, a young farrier. Glen has seen us through five horses, as well as the original pony. Since we have Paso Finos, it was a learning experience for all of us.

Now funny but not so much at the moment, my first Paso apparently never had shoes before Glenn. Trim done, shoe nailed on, nails protruding, then up in the air goes Mac! Flailing the knife edges as he went. Our friend Don was watching and grabbed the horse around his neck. We all yelled, “Let Go!” to Don. This happened only once in the entire 22 years Mac was with us. Glenn only does trims for our retired Pasos, now.

Glen does fox hunting horses, trail horses and driving horses. He is versatile and keeps a schedule better than some other farriers.

Trust is the word that I would use for Glenn. Always honest and an all around great guy.

Alisha Quinn (Albany, N.Y.)

Alisha is always there no matter what. She is always very responsive to any questions we may have about our horses and what is always best for them. She always puts my horses first. She always has a smile on her face every time she shows up and gets the job done even if the horses are a little impatient that day. She doesn’t judge what kind of barn, property, breed, or what you do with your horse. They could be a world class bred horse or your back yard mutt, she loves them like they were her own. I can’t say enough about how much I love “The Farrier Gal!”

Cathy's mentoring has allowed me to fully understand the educational needs and desires of farriers in order to set up programs to achieve this. Her humor helped me at times when I needed help in understanding things and her guidance and experience helped to steer me to goals she helped develop.

Her examples of service to the farrier industry, like flying in a snow storm to help a farrier in need hours away, are inspirational,

Scott Sullivan (Mills River, N.C.)

Scott is an amazing farrier. He’s caring and supportive. He works hard to help my horses and their feet while listening to their to their crazy owner.

— Barbara Cliff, Horse Shoe, N.C.

Scott always coordiates with our vet when needed. STAR Ranch is a 501-horse rescue facility for 16 years and many of our horses need much extra care. Many times, it's Scott who makes the recommendation for the extreme hoof care, often guided by X-rays. As much as we love and respect our vet, Scott sees a lot more hooves than he does. We follow Scott. 13 years at it here had created a huge following in the county and he may not know how very much he is appreciated by so many. He does donkeys better than anyone! It's ghastly hard work.

Jimmy Petty (Lexington, N.C.)

Jimmy Petty 1

Jimmy is so much more than just my mentor for shoeing horses. Before Jimmy was my mentor I was a barefoot trimmer for 9 years and he was one of the only farriers in my area who respected my thoughts and opinions despite our differences in philosophies. I started riding with him some to broaden my knowledge base for specific issues I was seeing as a trimmer. He introduced me to all of his clients as “the barefoot trimmer he was bringing to the dark side learning to shoe.” My business name is now Dark Side Forge thanks to Jimmy. I quickly became completely obsessed with the ways we can help more horses through shoeing and spent all the time I could with Jimmy at his clients or the Davie County Large Animal Hospital where he is one of their senior farriers.

Jimmy Petty 2Jimmy guided and pushed me towards getting my CF and APF-I. I never would have gone after either without his guidance. Two weeks before my CF certification I was determined to wait another year because I didn’t think I was ready. I’d never been more nervous for anything in my life. It was the most stressful 2 days of my life and harder than anything I did during my undergraduate or master’s degree programs prior to being a full-time farrier. Without a doubt I couldn’t have gotten through the prep work or that weekend without Jimmy’s guidance and support.

Jimmy is a great teacher and always welcomes other farriers or aspiring farriers to come ride with him or pick his brain on cases. He is never judgmental and always keeps the horse’s best interest at the forefront of his mind. His two mottos are “horse above ego” and “take never and always out of your vocabulary.” He embodies both of these daily.

Beyond just shoeing horses Jimmy is an incredible horseman and friend. The care and understanding he has for the horse is nothing short of admirable. I have learned so much about what it means to be a friend of the horse from him. As a friend, Jimmy is someone you’re blessed to have in your corner. He is always one of my firsts texts/calls for a multitude of scenarios.

Jimmy has changed my life professionally and personally and it is one of the biggest honors I have ever known to call him my mentor and friend. We’d all be lucky to have just a portion of his knowledge and skill!

Mark Franks (Harrison, Ohio)

I'd like to recognize Mark for his dedication to excellence, commitment to education, sharing his talent, and partnering with the veterinary community while advancing the profession of furriery.

Mark has participated in self-education by spending time at the podiatry clinic at Rood & Riddle, attending the International Hoof-Care Summit, and hosting Blake Brown for two follow-up clinics.

He has mentored several young farriers including his current associate Eric Hoffrogge and his two sons Jesse and Cole. Jesse is now a practicing farrier in our area.

Along the way, Mark helped establish and participates in a Vet/Farrier Day hosted by Ann Frederick every 6 weeks at the A5A Farm with Mark and his associates working with the veterinarians from Miamitown Equine to work with horses and owners that need advanced farriery, digital radiography, sedation, etc. working in a team environment to provide the best outcome for the horse which is how Mark practices his profession.

Dean Geis (New Windsor, Md.)

Dean GeisI’d like to acknowledge Dean Geis. I would not be a farrier today if it wasn’t for Dean. I had been struggling for many years as a farrier after multiple relocations around the country. I met Dean at the local blacksmith guild and he instantly took me under his wing. His truck always had an open invitation. After a short time we developed a great relationship, he was the mentor I had been craving since graduating farrier school. He gave me a tremendous appreciation and respect for the local horse world and the local farrier community, and held me to a standard that was unparalleled in any of my previous work. I have found a home here in Maryland and a network of like-minded farriers here all because of this man. I know I’m not the only one around here who owes their livelihood to Dean. If I never met Dean on that fateful Sunday, I most likely would have sold my tools and gone on to something else. I owe him my gratitude for being the best mentor anyone could have asked for. I hope to one day pass on his legacy to at least one person, but I know I’ll never match what he’s given to all the local farriers, vets, and horse owners he’s passed through. It was a bittersweet year for us as Dean decided to officially retire. But that also means more opportunities to get him in our trucks and show him how much he taught us.

— Sean Losee, Mount Airy, Md.

Dean Geis 2

Dean Geis is my mentor and someone I consider a father figure. He has guided me and molded me into the successful farrier I am today. He is someone our community looks up to. He is one of hardest working people I know. Besides being wonderful farrier, he is a loving husband and an all around cool man. He is someone that his clients, fellow farriers and vets in the area all know him and have more than enough good things to say about him. He is known for his good work, stellar music tastes, sense of humor, infectious smile and laugh. Not to mention his summer attire of suspenders attached to swim trunks. Thank you Dean for being you and thank you for being an amazing farrier.

Ross Smith (Moose Jaw, Saskatchewan)

Ross Smith

I would like to thank our farrier, Ross Smith from Moose Jaw, Saskatcheewan. In 2006, our horse Galen had huge issues with his feet and our veterinarian called Ross and asked if he “wanted a challenge.” When he arrived to have a look at Galen he did not have any idea what he would do. When he left he still did not know exactly how he was going to help but he accepted the challenge. Fast forward to a year later and Galen was sound and performing in the hunter/jumper ring. Galen was always in the ribbons and in 2008 began to place first in competitions. In 2010, Galen won first place in nearly every class of every horse show he was in and won many provincial awards. We believe without Ross as his farrier Galen and Katie (owner/rider) would never have achieved such accomplishments. We are so very grateful to Ross for his work with Galen in keeping him sound and productive with his innovative shoeing and thinking “out side the box” ideas.

Ross is still our farrier for our horses Perry and Acorn. We are there and have been there at every trim/shoeing and have learned so much about the care and issues that feet can have. Ross is a teacher. Patient, understanding and answers all our questions about our horses. His 40 years of horseshoeing experience has taught him a lot and we and all his other clients have benefited.

We know from listening to his other clients that Ross treats all of them and their horses with the same care and attention he had with Galen and now with Perry and Acorn. He has done some amazing things to help a horse. He has become one of the “go to” farriers for serious, complicated feet issues. His passion for his craft and dedication to helping horses is what makes him one of the top farriers in Saskatchewan if not Western Canada.

Ross is also an avid ranch roping enthusiast. He is president of the Canadian Ranch Roping Association, a teacher of Ranch Hand and Ranch Roping clinics, volunteers at the Moose Jaw Rough Stock School, which introduces and teaches young people about bareback and saddle bronc riding. He has worked in the Community Pastures in Saskatchewan applying his skills and knowledge of roping, cattle and horsemanship to the job. As you can see with everything he has done and continues to do, horses are always a part of his life.

Ross’ passions for helping horses, has led him to invent a tool and a guide to trim/shoe horse’s feet. It is called the Center of Balance Indicating Tool. It is a straightforward tool that anyone can use. He invented it to help a horse named Henry that was experiencing severe lameness issues when conventional shoeing was not able to help the horse. It is no surprise to anyone who knows Ross that he would take those extra steps in helping a horse. We experienced it with Galen. His philosophy of “listen to the horse,” to watch and learn from them is what makes him such a great farrier. Thank you Ross!

Todd Boston (Shelbyville, Ky.) and Chad Boston (Lexington, Ky.)

Boston Brothers Boston Brothers 2

In Kentucky Thoroughbred racing, the Boston name is synonyms with hard work and high quality Thoroughbred farrier work. Todd Boston started working with his father Bob in the 1980s. Soon afterward, Todd’s brother Chad began his farrier career. Both have praise for their father Bob and the late Jim Bayes. The Boston brothers have shod Thoroughbreds around the world and have worked on several of the top thoroughbreds in North America. Todd is based out of Louisville, Churchill Downs, and Chad out of Keeneland in Lexington.

Their attention to detail and efficiency are key attributes to their success. Over the years, they both have helped educate manufacturers on what products are needed in the industry.

Derby week 2022 Todd Boston shod seven of the Kentucky Derby contenders. A feat, likely, that has never been equaled. Some of the champion Thorougbred horses Todd has worked on are Tepin, Monomoy Girl, Swiss Sky Diver, Justify, Big Brown, Hard Spun, American Pharaoh, Silver Charm, Knicks Go and Authentic.

Happy farrier week to the Bostons.

Eli Stutzman (Apple Creek, Ohio)

It all started at Yoder’s Blacksmith Supply when were both kids in Dundee, Ohio. My father had a 200-acre farm with quite a few racehorses. We originally jogged our horses on the road. Later there was a track built. Our farrier wasn’t far, just a couple of miles so that was our go to. A small Amish blacksmith shop had many of our horses there and a lot of storytelling along the way. My brothers and I were into racing, but our little sister wasn’t interested at all. Dad and Dan trained. Dad, Dan and Dustin drove a bit. I was the “help.” I never forgot Eli, many years later, my father and brothers got out of the business and I begged to get back in. I was 36 and scared to death of jumping in heart first. I couldn’t think of anyone I trusted more than Eli with my first racehorse. Casino Director has been amazing to me, we’ve both grown so much together. He went from a 1:57 pacer to a 1:52 in 3 years. Eli and I have been through a lot and he’ll always be the one I call. It doesn’t matter if it’s a heel crack, a quarter crack, a sprung shoe, he always makes time for us little guys. He’s way more appreciated than he knows. He was our blacksmith then, he will always me mine now.

– Miranda Shedron, Wooster, Ohio

Eli always goes the extra mile. I have Standardbred racehorses and mine are always the “project” type. Never easy. We have got some horses with terrible feet on the right track to the winner circle. I’m never afraid he won’t listen to what I have to say or veterinary advice. He truly wants to help the animal. And he’s a great friend, as well. Definitely a very important professional in my toolbox for training. I couldn’t do it without him.

Jamie Simpson (New Brunswick)

One of my biggest challenges when I started my equine sanctuary was getting everyone trimmed. And then I learned about laminitis. Two of my ponies were suffering. I attended No Laminitis conferences, tried holistic vets, called anyone and everyone. Farriers and vets came and went with the same protocols. I was lucky that Jamie finally agreed to help me. We talked about the importance of movement and diet and, of course, a good trim.

Before picking up their hooves he always has a conversation with them and from day 1 they loved him. He is respectful of everyone whether they wiggle around or aren't able to lift a hoof, he will be caring and gentle and never show frustration.

Not only has he corrected their trims, he has been an incredible mentor. He teaches and guides me without any effort, showing me something new every trim. I now have the confidence with my nippers and knives to lift up any hoof. Jamie is one of a kind, a true craftsman and all around pleasure to have around my farm.

Kip Kaupua (Pearl City, Hawaii)

Kip Kaupua

Kip is a farrier of Hawaiian descent. He’s been shoeing horses across the Hawaiian islands for 30-plus years. Kip took me on as an apprentice last year and gave me a chance to learn despite my lack of experience or education and farrier science. Due to his physical condition/wear and tear from his work, Kip is nearing the end of his career, but still has years of good work left in him. I’d like to show my appreciation to him for teaching me at least enough to find my own clients. The farrier industry in Hawaii is not highly respected, most likely due to uneducated horse owners, but the few farriers who are working in Hawaii are very knowledgeable and have high demands and high expectations from people who show too little appreciation. The photo I have attached is the only one of Kip I have, and you will see a fellow farrier Max, as well, who is younger and also learned from Kip.

Philip Himanka (Erie, Colo.)

Philip Himanka

Philip Himanka is a farrier who continues to educate me and his other clients about horses hooves every time he works with you and your horse. Notice that I said “with you”. He answer questions, enthusiastically teaches, pulls out anatomical models and books. Never once, no matter how hot a day or how bad his back probably is hurting has he blown me off, been too busy or talked down to me for asking questions. I’ve had farriers in the past act like I was lucky to have their business and they were not even doing a good job, horses were lamed, they were late, rude. I never understood why it was that way in a business. But, it isn’t always. My horses — all of them — have beautiful gravel crunching hooves with anatomically correct trimming, and now thanks to Philip I know this. I can walk around the barn and see underrun heels, long toes, bull-nosing, flares, medial-lateral imbalance. He’s created a monster. But it’s wonderful to know the difference between a good trim and hoof and I owe that all to a farrier who is passionate about teaching and horses. I just pray if he ever retires he has taught enough students to pass on his wisdom. He is the best there is.

Tiffany Gardner (Plymouth, Calif.)

There’s a reason that Bob Smith entrusted management of his world-renowned Pacific Coast Horseshoeing School to Tiffany Gardner. She’s just the best person for the job. Not only are her horseshoeing skills top notch, but she brings empathy for students who struggle in their first days putting metal to hoof. I came so close to throwing in the towel after my first week of school. When I told her I had no faith in myself, she had faith in me. Whenever I struggled, she would find a way to show me what needed to be done. She taught me how to bend steel and nail it on a horse, a person who never worked with hot metal before. She uses finesse and care in working with people, steel and horses. I made it through, largely because of Tiffany. She sets a standard for excellence that her students strive for long after they finish school. I’m sure many others are proudly holding their diplomas on graduation day because she gave them the skill and confidence to see it through. Thanks Tiff. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Jim Maier (Rochester, Pa.)

Jim Maier is a farrier our family had found. He was inexpensive, rich and deep in knowledge. He had graduated from the Texas School of Farriery. His trimming and balancing techniques were just as comparable to Gene Ovnicek’s, before I had heard of Gene Ovnicek’s Natural Balance Shoeing techniques.  Jim started coming out for one pony that had been mechanically foundered. As we acquired more ponies, mules and burros, he started handing me the rasp and taught me to trim and shoe. One particular visit, my stepfather spliced his leg rope while watching us trim. It was always a treat each appointment he showed up.  When we were shoeing, we were shoeing.

Richard ArmentroutThis farrier not just deserves recognition, but an award. His skill, patience, knowledge, mentorship and friendship are incomparable to anyone I’ve ever met. Richard Armentrout, aka “Mr Rich,” is one of the most respectful farriers and men, I’ve ever known and worked with.

His commitment to God and family and the horses in his charge, compare with no one. The long hours during the day, the late night case study work, and my endless calls/texts/messages, along with clients; he never gets annoyed or is bothered. (No matter how many times he has to repeat or re explain).

Richard Armentrout, is the one who saved my career when I thought for sure I was going to quit. He encouraged me, pushed and continues to push me to be better and think outside the box. If I don’t understand or get something, Rich’s steady hands and patient character is there to reassure or guide me.

His dedication to God, the farrier community, and horses in his care are more than just a work or mentor learning experience. I am so blessed to get to work with Rich and call him a friend. He deserves so much more than mention by me. I can only hope, and want to model my career and business after him.

Merle “Skip” Carlsgaard (Enterprise, Ore.)

Skip Carlsgaard 1

I cannot begin to explain the skill and dedication to horses soundness by my farrier, Skip. My 2-year-old gelding severed 1/3 of his front hoof trying to climb on a tractor parked in his field. I called Skip as I rushed him to the vet and he met me there. Skip immediately devised a treatment plan with the vet and began constructing a shoe for the inured foot  Over the next 6 months, he worked diligently on a 4-week schedule wrestling with a reluctant patient to heal this horrible injury. Skip never gave up hope through several drawbacks and within a year I was able to start the young horse. He is now a working ranch horse wearing a regular shoe due to Skip's skill. Skip makes himself available to the local veterinarians when a call comes in for extreme cases, and has many successful stories when there was little hope. Skip is training a young man to continue to provide specialized farrier service to our very rural area. We very blessed to have such a skilled master farrier available for special cases in our area. Thank you.

Justin KlejeskiI can’t say enough good things about my farrier Justin Klejeski. Justin has been my farrier for over 12 years. He has seen me through multiple horses, disciplines of riding, and barn moves. He is fantastic with my horses – patient but firm, always keeping them and their performance or therapeutic needs in mind when he’s shoeing.

I originally met him during a very scary health issue with one of my Quarter Horses. Justin was there for the rehabilitation and continued years of maintenance on my navicular horse and to this day all these years later, if one of my horses throws a shoe or needs his attention – he is quick to respond and fits us in.

I value Justin’s ability and appreciate how much he cares about each horse he works with. I have a feeling his entire book of customers feel the same way!

Dave has been not only been my farrier for the last 20-plus years, I also gained him as a step-dad 2 years ago. There were times growing up he would drive to the barn to trim the horses and certain horses wouldn't need their hooves trimmed and he wouldn’t bill us a dime. (Despite our attempt to get him to take some sort of payment). Your horse threw a shoe last minute before a show? He was there to fix it. Those are just a few examples of what a great farrier he is. By name dropping that first connection I got a couple calls back, one was Eva Clark. Eva is incredibly patient and encouraging. Kristin has taken a huge step out of her comfort zone to take on a (normally) multi-farrier practice on her own and is kicking butt.

— Easton Timko, Hillsdale, Mich.

Kristin is an incredible farrier and friend, I am so thankful to have met her at a clinic all those years ago!

I cannot thank her enough for being a voice of reason, sounding board and always being in my corner.

Jordan Carelli (Dracut, Mass.)

Jordan Carelli

I have never had a more reliable farrier in the many years I have been in the horse industry. I clearly remember in my younger days waiting hours for the farrier to arrive with the expected arrival time similar to that of our cable or internet providers. Jordan tells me when he will be there and always shows up on time. This makes my work easy to schedule around and so greatly appreciated! Beyond the reliability I have always appreciated his availability to help with random hoof concerns from chips to abscesses. Best of all he knows my horses well and if ever needed, he works well with my veterinarians.

Between his reliability and knowledge, I have recommended him to all my friends with horses.

Rock Earnhart

I’d like to recognize my farrier Rock as being well educated in the hoof care of my horses, considerate in notifying me in appointments, mindful of the hoof needs of each of my horses, a good businessman, and last but not least a good friend.

Dave Farley (Wellington, Fla.), Arnie Gervasio (Ringoes, N.J.), the late Lee Liles (Sulphur, Okla.), Terry Stever (Sulphur, Okla.), Danny Terry (Pilot Point, Texas)

Harry Serio

Because I grew up training and showing Quarter Horses, I was already heavily connected to the industry, and was able to secure a spot as one of the official farriers early in my horseshoeing career. It was there that I met and I was able to work side-by-side for many years with Lee Liles,Terry Stever, Dave Farley, Arnie Gervasio, and Danny Terry (all pictured). These guys took me in and treated me like family. The knowledge that I gained working around these legendary farriers and the friendships that were forged is unmeasurable.

So, during this special week dedicated to farriers, I want everyone of these guys to know how much I appreciate them and all the help I received from them throughout my journey.

Thanks so much guys.

Harry Serio, Finksburg, Md.

Dani Parker (Portland, Ore.)

Dani is hands down the most kind, talented, amazing human being and farrier I’ve ever met. Her knowledge of the entire horse — to take in account all parts of the body and how hooves relate — is something very important to me. She has been a gift to my horses and they love her. From transitioning my Thoroughbred out of steel shoes, winning over my shy mustang and now helping me bring my newly diagnosed navicular horse back to soundness — I trust her 100%. Thank you Dani for all you’ve done for me and my weirdo steeds to keep us trekking through the mountains.

— Niki Curnell, Vancouver, Wash.

Dani Parker

I manage the horses at a small nonprofit, and I cannot stress enough how grateful I am that Dani makes the trip all the way out to us every 5 weeks for trimming. Our horses are doing so much better since they got on a consistent 5-week schedule, and it’s so exciting to witness the progress. Dani is also committed to learning all the time, and is therefore able to bring ever more perspective to each appointment. As someone who is also very committed to never stop learning (especially in relation to horses), this is something I really value. Dani, thank you heaps for your patience, attention to detail, and shared love for these horses who give so much of themselves!

— Jenna Milton, Goldendale, Wash.

Dean Moshier (Columbus, Ohio)

I would like to recognize Dean Moshier for being not only an awesome farrier but an wonderful friend. When I first met Dean, I was in a pickle. My blacksmith had just moved out of state and the person who took over the business was lacking in experience. My horse had foundered and required a skilled farrier. I searched the internet and found Dean's name. I called him and he was able to come right out. He quickly put my concerns to rest and went to work. He has the patience of a saint when it comes to working on horses that are in pain and geriatric. He went above and beyond in trying to find the latest information on shoeing laminitic horses at a time when there just wasn't that much knowledge out there. In the 10-plus years that he had shod my horses, I never worred about their feet. If something was brewing, he was the first person I called. If the horses needed something different in their feet care, he spoke right up and we hashed out a treatment plan. When life changed and I moved 3-plus hours away, Dean recommended a farrier in my area that he knew would be able to shoe them successfully. It has been 7 years since I have moved and still to this day when a horse pulls a shoe or is lame Dean is still the first person I want to call. His drive for continuing his education is what sets him apart from all other farriers.

Shane Westman (Davis, Calif.)

I met Shane Westman early in my career as a farrier and he has been a great friend and mentor throughout my entire career. Shane has always been on the sidelines being a cheerleader for me and all the farriers he comes in contact with. Several years ago, I got to spend a week with Shane at UC Davis Veterinary Hospital where he is the resident farrier. That week was an incredible learning opportunity for me. He went over everything from the use of synthetics such as Polyflex to dealing with keratomas to white line disease and everything else you would want to learn. Shane is what other farriers should strive to be. Shane is a well-rounded farrier with a cheerleader attitude. I know whenever I need to have a listening ear to a farrier, personal or financial question, Shane will always be there to offer counsel. Like I said, he is a role model of what farriers should be.

Scott and Sydney Wilkinson (Bergman, Ark.)

Wilkinson

I first met this amazing family of hard working farriers after my horses were loaned out and returned with horrid feet. I didn’t think one would be saved.

They were not only able to trim them, but they fixed all the things I was worried about and taught me so very much about my horses feet.

Fast forward less than a month after being shod, one of my geldings had a freak accident after a dog had chased him through a fence. His shoe was stuck in the wire and forced him to be still. Our vet said, had he been able to wiggle that shoe free he would have broken his leg and would have been euthanized.

I frantically called Scott and Sydney and they immediately gave me the tools to safely free him. Once he was free they made an opening in their already busy day to help me save his hoof. They even taped his leg to help his pain.

My vet was astonished and credits his recovery to their efforts.  I am forever grateful to them.

If anyone deserves recognition, it’s Wilkinson Farrier Services, in Bergman, Ark.

Tom Trosin (Oklahoma City, Okla.)

Tom is an amazing farrier! Always patient with horses, as well as me (and my sister).  He has the best knowledge, deals with all my questions, does the best for my horses.  He is a great teacher (to clients and apprentices both). He has done this work the last several years with a lot of pain. But now, he is really Bionic Man with 2 new hips!

I, and my horses, thank Tom for everything he does for us! Thanks for all the extra you do for my baby girl.

Beth Lewis (Ossippee, N.H.)

Beth Lewis of EquiBalance Farrier Service is an amazing farrier. She goes above and beyond to help all her clients in every way possible. I have cried many tears in her presence over the years with career ending lameness diagnosis for one of my mares and she still comes back week after week, checking in and making sure my “princess and the pea” is feeling comfortable. Always continuing her education to better her services for clients of all disciplines. The horse world is a better place with Beth in it.

Bonnie, you are surely the most important person in the lives of my horse. Sure, I feed them and love on them, but that’s more for my emotional well-being than anything. You’re the one who keeps them sound. You alert me to problems, not just with their feet, but in all areas of their health and well-being. I am so thankful for you! I can’t imagine me having horses if you weren’t part of the team. Thank you not for just being my farrier, but for being my friend.

Hunter Glisson-Warner (Hempstead, Texas)

I can honestly say, fate brought Hunter into my horse’s life. I can’t remember how I stumbled upon her Facebook page, but I am beyond grateful I did. Hunter is so accommodating, hard-working, and just out-right loving. Every time she works with my horses, she constantly has a smile on her face and the best attitude. Even when one of them kicks, stomps, or tries to use her as a kick-stand, she is always so patient and calm and truly shows them love and understanding. Hunter is always striving to learn and her top priority is doing what is best for the horses. Starting from feeding advice, pasture management, tools and websites you can use for research and knowledge, she really has it all covered. I wish I could clone her and send her out across the world to ensure the betterment of horse ownership and improve the lives of all she encounters. Hunter deserves the highest of accolades!

Christina Mendoza-Green (Ooltewah, Tenn.)

Christina Mendoza-Green

Christina is a barefoot trimmer who took on my horse’s founder case after another provider recommended euthanasia due to a combination of rotation, sinking, medial-lateral imbalances and pedal osteitis. She took the time to speak to me and my barn manager about how we could support Roman with correct diet and lifestyle changes, as well as walked me through how she was “reading” my horse’s hooves during his monthly appointments. She started trimming his hooves to promote better lamellar connection and encourage sole growth, and sized him for supportive booties to wear when needed. Even when I was anxious and emotional about the outcome of his case, Christina maintained a calm, positive, and confident attitude that has set the tone for this chapter of Roman’s rehabilitation story. I appreciate how committed she has been to thoroughly educating herself on hoof care and how she also takes the time to educate her clients so we can feel involved and empowered during the rehabilitation process and beyond; I can understand the “why” behind my horse’s trims. She is passionate about her clients getting a proper diet and appropriate exercise, and stresses the importance of working patiently with the hoof to find better balance. Not only has Christina drastically improved Roman’s quality of life (he’s like a different horse), but she has also taught me an invaluable lesson: getting back to the basics can change everything.

Jennifer Poulin (Belvidere, Vt.)

Jennifer Poulin 1

There is a passion in Jennifer that you won’t find in most farriers. At the end of the day, she wants the horse to improve and thrive with the work she does. Her continued dedication to continuing her education as a hoof provider is second to none. Her desire to educate me as a horse owner and have me understand the how, the why, and the what for is one of a kind. When it comes to collaboration she will jump on board and be a part of the team.

She has a big heart and an even bigger smile and sense of humor.

Most of all, my horse adores her, stands foot perfect for her, and if he needs a break, she listens and in response, he trusts her, and she trusts him!

I’m so grateful that she is on my team and so is my horse!

Jeff Mangone (Virginia Beach, Va.)

Jeff Mangone

My farrier is the best, hands down! Thanks to Jeff, my horse is rideable again. When Jeff first took our case my horse had 3 mm of sole and negative angles. Jeff corrected the front hooves and made my horse comfortable and sound. He has gone above and beyond to take care of us! My horse is sensitive about his back hooves and Jeff found a glue-on solution that makes him comfortable. If it were not for Jeff, I don’t think I’d be riding my horse again. He is the ONLY farrier in the area who knows how to trim correctly!

Alicia Harlov (Hamilton, Mass.)

Alicia Harlov

After much research, I decided to try my horse barefoot. She is a 17-year-old draft cross with great feet, so she seemed like a good candidate. I became aware of Alicia Harlov from other horse owners I knew raving about her work. I discovered her social media page and podcast. I was immediately struck by how passionate and knowledgeable Alicia is. I decided making a major change with my horse's feet should be done with the best farrier possible, and that is exactly what she is. From our first appointment, Alicia was exhaustively thorough about every aspect of my horse's health/life. She wanted to know absolutely everything — it was incredible to see how she approached the beginning of my horse's rehab to barefoot. She took video of her moving and standing to see how she uses her feet to develop her strategy. From the very first trim, Veronica (my horse) began to move in our rides like she was 10 years old again. Alicia has carefully documented her progress and has provided vital recommendations for her diet to continue to improve the quality of her hooves. Alicia challenges me to educate myself to improve my horse's health and happiness. Watching her work is like watching a sculpture artist carefully make tiny adjustments for the finished piece of artwork. She makes an adjustment and stands back to see the results as she is working — it's a beautiful process. I truly feel I have a partner in my horse's health and well-being with Alicia Harlov. Not only has she pursued knowledge for her own work, but she so generously makes it available for others to access and learn from. She very aptly named her business "The Humble Hoof" as being humble provides space for all to grow. Alicia is truly a gifted farrier.

Laura Ritonia (Williston, Fla.)

Laura Ritonia

I appreciate my farrier so much. She keeps my horse balanced and sound — she's a great farrier but she's an even greater human being! She has been one of the regular farriers at Beauty's Haven Equine Rescue in Morriston, Fla., for many years. There is always a wide variety of hoof-care issues, as well as health, recovery from abuse and training. Some are so starved they cannot stand but they do recover! One pony has to be hoisted for her trims.

She has a generous spirit and often donates her time, skills and products to those in need. I was lucky to accompany her and two other farriers April and Madeline to the Panhandle area, where Cat 5 Hurricane Michael hit in 2018. These gals gathered hay, grain and shelter supplies and drove over there and trimmed as many horses as they could pro bono for 2 days.

She attends a continuing education programs with IAEP, as well as joining other farrier friends at the big conventions ... always learning.

She has the most generous and helpful spirit of anyone I know, both as a farrier and as a human — she helps as many or more people as she does horses. Everything from trapping and transporting feral cats for spay/neuter to providing food, funds and shelter to homeless and low income individuals — she sees opportunities to help every where and she does it!

Her approach is quiet and gentle, always patient, her nature puts horses and people alike, at ease.

I really think the world would be a better place if there were more like her.

Cody Dietz (Mustang, Okla.)

I want to shout out about my farrier Cody Dietz. Good, knowledgeable farriers are very far and few between in the part of the state that I live in. I was desperate because my other farrier, out of the blue, just quit calling me back when I called to set up an appointment. I finally found Cody and am very pleased with his work and temperament around my horse. He is very knowledgeable and fast with his trims. Cody keeps his clients on a schedule and travels over an hour to my town. He has several other clients besides me here and is so good about keeping me informed as to his schedule, if he is running late or ahead of time. I am so thankful that I found Cody, he is a very good farrier and a very nice person.

Dr. Nabors is a DVM at the Mississippi State University vet school. He used to be a full-time farrier, before he went to vet school. Then he got his PhD in equine feet anatomy (I think — not entirely sure about that). Now, he is one of the most beloved professors of anatomy at the vet school, but he also services a lot of horses’ feet from all around our area. He is quite amazing. He has been a blessing to many horses over the years, providing corrective footcare to all sorts of horses with all sorts of foot problems. He is a humble and kind man, but those who know, know just how extraordinary of a farrier he is. He is quite deserving of special recognition. Thanks!
