Merle “Skip” Carlsgaard (Enterprise, Ore.)
I cannot begin to explain the skill and dedication to horses soundness by my farrier, Skip. My 2-year-old gelding severed 1/3 of his front hoof trying to climb on a tractor parked in his field. I called Skip as I rushed him to the vet and he met me there. Skip immediately devised a treatment plan with the vet and began constructing a shoe for the inured foot Over the next 6 months, he worked diligently on a 4-week schedule wrestling with a reluctant patient to heal this horrible injury. Skip never gave up hope through several drawbacks and within a year I was able to start the young horse. He is now a working ranch horse wearing a regular shoe due to Skip's skill. Skip makes himself available to the local veterinarians when a call comes in for extreme cases, and has many successful stories when there was little hope. Skip is training a young man to continue to provide specialized farrier service to our very rural area. We very blessed to have such a skilled master farrier available for special cases in our area. Thank you.
