“A driving force in my career.” “Patient and kind while teaching me.” “Because of his mentorship, I have been able to make a real difference in many horses’ lameness cases and create true value for my client.” These are some of the comments that farriers made about their mentors during the 2018 National Farriers Week.
The words felt like wads of cotton in my mouth — thick, difficult to swallow. I could barely spit them out: “Neal, should I put her down?” “Neal” is my farrier, Neal Martin; “her” is Annie, my defiant, independent little rescue pony. Neal’s answer: “Let’s wait until spring.”
